Both AMD and Intel have landed multi million dollar contracts from the American Department of Energy in order to crank up research into high performance computing. It seems that the US government was calling for help from all the sides.
AMD made a statement a week ago, saying that it will undertake development of HPC technologies to move towards the future of exascale computing. As a result, AMD will be given a cheque for $12.6 million to continue research into the area of processor and memory technologies.
A few days later, Intel has also announced that it will bag a contract from the Department of Energy to conduct exascale computing research. Within the frames of the government’s Fast Forward program, Intel’s Federal subsidiary was handed $19 million to conduct research as well. The hardware giant admits that the company will be pushing towards exascale computing by the end of this decade, and the research will go into its Xeon chips.
In the meantime, industry experts doubt that the two companies will be sharing any notes within the program. This is understandable, taking into account their competing positions in the market. However, they both will be joining up with a number of academics and industry figures in frames of the joint public-private project.
It is expected that advances in HPC should boost the country’s infrastructure. Moreover, it should create benefits for business, accessing computation power many times higher than today, while requiring similar power consumption. By the way, a number of HPC facilities in the United Kingdom that are aimed at business use have been unveiled recently.

Interesting bet the yanks are sick of getting Powned by the China and Russia.. for that kind of money you know Intel and AMD gave them some nice toys, should be interesting to see how the money is used.... Keep us updated on this SaM

ok then I expect 6ghz 8core cpu's by the end of next year. ram has evolved nicely but cpu's are stayed @ 2-3ghz for years. I also expect prices to drop. stereo 3D monitors to cost the same as 2D monitors. 1TB+ ssd's to be developed @ that same cost of current 1tb+ hdd's.
@hrg: the US government has a load of nice toys, this was just to further the development of digital warfare. they are just not telling anybody this. the US has been so far behind in tec for the last 20+ years, and do you think that just now they are willing to invest in getting the US up to speed with japan? I don't think so.

@clamo well since the Chinese, Russians & anonymous have been publicly embarrassing them and since there willing to throw so much money into private company's, yes i do think there willing to invest to get up to speed....
NO CLAMO!!!, We need 8 GHZ CPUS, then 16 then 32, then 64 then 128 then 256 then 512 then FINnALly 1THZ!!!!! THEN WE BE ROLLING for another 10 years...

@1shadowwolf: I understand that we need to go that direction but in this country's current state that will never happen as no one would be able to buy the cpu's @ 8+ghz.
@hrg: honestly.....the US has always been considered a laughing stock since the 90's so I do not see this happening. hell just about everything the US used to be about is the complete opposite now. and the government claims to be broke. the amount that was given is chump change compared to what amd and Intel really have. these corporations have already stated a profit loss on current hardware, and prices are already to Hi for most ppl, so using this small lump sum will really do nothing to get us caught up with the rest of the world. when no one can even afford the current prices on this low tech that they are currently offering.

chum [ change lol idiot that is why AMD stock just took a big hit. Idiot
lol half the chinese componants in the american military hardware are knock offs the other half are spy equipment

yes the american are offering chump change compared to india ( 2 billion) and China who decided to build everything from the ground up including the processors ( multiple billions)
Let it burn....change can't happen without it....the rich have destroyed America ! were swirling the drain now ....Until the 4 media companies brainwashing America are stopped were screwed .Nuke China,Mexico and India the rest of the worlds economy should recover quickly too.lol that's were are jobs went.

|PC gamer consume high power electricity at home and where around world can have high consumption of electricity if government knew it own and companies with high tech who have it if they have it own power electricity plats with resources. and,why ask for help if government knew how save energy with new development projects can't introduce it to the market for any reason like home power plants size a refrigerator working by it self and nobody knows what happened it or I didn't hear more of that.||
