You all must be dropping your jaws after having an encounter of such news. No? Well, its absolutely true that the recent study and after a detailed inquiry, it has been proved by a Princeton University’s senior, Sauhard Sahi. He examined a bunch of files that were present in the BitTorrent sites publicly.
BitTorrent is already touching its heights and grasped a massive popularity, admiration and love from the people. We get what we actually want from the BitTorrent world and everybody is known about the fact that this BiTTorrent world is growing up really hard and it has a great damn future, indeed. But there is one thing that makes a point here and pinches to the anti-piracy groups that keep on raiding all around, and the thing is whether the files that are being shared vastly all around the world are infringing the copyrighted stuff or is it just normal one and this is the only reason that made Sauhard Sahi fetch around and let the world know what’s going on in the BitTorrent world.
Mainline DHT was used by Sauhard through which he accessed the different varying BitTorrent sites which are trackerless and identical sample of file were chosen. The sample consisted about 1021 file in it. The systematic categories made by him were file type, language, and apparent copyright status.
The files taken by Sauhard as sample for the inquiry wasn’t taken into consideration as if they are downloaded or not, the consideration were on the basis of the availability of the file in the sites.
Percentage of the disruption :
46% movies and shows (non-pornographic)
14% games and software
1% books and guides
14% could not classify
Estimation of nature that the file have, was also made by Sauhard and even examined whether the files are copyright-infringing or non-copyright infringing. A proper category that is “judgment calls” was made to check things and the category had fundamental ingredients that are – if the files seemed to be accessible without any cost by the means of legitimate channels, in public domain or even if it’s a content generated by user.
The result that was concluded by him was very interesting and shocking. Result concluded that 476 TV shows or movies taken as a sample by him were all violating the infringement law. The counting didn’t stopped there, moreover 141 files from 148 files were declared as violating the law that were categorized as games and software. One out of 145 file related to porn was found violating the law, 13 out of 15 files which were in the infringement area were found in the category of books and guides and last but not the least from the grasped 98 music trackers, almost all were included in the infringement of copyrighted.
After concluding such percentage and numbers of files, he declared the overall result and found only 1% that was non-infringing out of 100% which mean 99% were those files that violated the copyrighted infringement law.
Ed Felten, the instructor who watched over Sauhard, cleared up a thing by saying that, “This result should be interpreted with caution, as we may have missed some non-infringing files, and our sample is of files available, not files actually downloaded.”
The declaration clearly shows that BitTorrent users are still involved in the infringement of copyrighted material and it’s spreaded massively.

Interesting article but I think it could be driven one way or the other based on how he wanted the results to turn out.
