Julian Assange, currently hiding in the Ecuadorian embassy in the UK capital, will apparently get another defense against extradition led by controversial Spanish jurist Baltasar Garzón.
The WikiLeaks founder, whose extradition on sex charges to Sweden is all over bar the shouting and the plane ticket out of the United Kingdom, has jumped bail and is currently trying to get protection from the Ecuador.
Baltasar Garzón is a human rights investigator, known for indicting Augusto Pinochet. Nevertheless, he was disbarred as a judge in Spain this past February after being caught wiretapping conversations between defense lawyers and their clients during a corruption investigation which involved the Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s People’s Party.
Garzón was given an 11-year suspension, because his supporters claimed he had been the victim of a conspiracy to bring down one of the best-known human rights investigators in the world. Baltasar Garzón has announced that he would lend Julian Assange the weight of his knowledge of international human rights and extradition legislation in his case, which he called “arbitrary and baseless”.
Garzón claimed that Julian Assange was a victim of obscure international political maneuvering. He added that WikiLeaks founder should be protected by the same rights as any other citizen, apparently not meaning the right to face the accusers in a fair trial.
The lawyer pointed out that Julian Assange hadn’t rebelled against the UK legislation, but rather respected it. However, the attorney is seriously worried about what will happen to Assange, since his situation is becoming political as a result of the enormous work done by his organization (WikiLeaks) when it comes to denouncing corruption.
Baltasar Garzón claimed it couldn’t be right that a single person like Assange should find himself under such pressure from the governments of both Sweden and Great Britain. In the meantime, the opposers point out that the lawyer forgot about the human rights of Assange’s alleged victims. It may look like since they are just women, they must be puppets of the CIA and Julian Assange may do whatever he likes. Still, the discussion of whether the sex accusations are even true hasn’t ended thus far.
