Demonoid Operators Will Face Mexican Court

After being closed down by the police of Ukraine, Demonoid (one of the largest BitTorrent trackers in the world) is not yet off the hook, with the people heading the service now being under criminal investigation and prosecution in Mexico.

A few days ago Ukraine confirmed that Demonoid wasn’t just subject to DDoS attacks – the website has also been raided by the police. A week ago the government authorities came to ColoCall (the Toller) – the firm hosting Demonoid – in order to close the service down. The representatives of the company confirmed in the interview to the local media that investigators have copied all the data from the Demonoid servers and sealed them. Apparently, Ukraine had promised the US that it would do its best to improve its efforts towards enforcing copyright and so presented Demonoid on a platter. An anonymous source in the Ukraine’s Interior Ministry confirmed that this action was scheduled to coincide with Deputy Prime Minister’s trip to the US.

Peter Vlasenko, Commercial Director at ColoCall, claimed that his company did warn Demonoid a few times about the complaints filed against the BitTorrent tracker. In addition, Vlasenko warned that this could force the website’s Internet service provider to cut any relations with it, which actually took place last week.

Sergei Burlakov, the spokesperson for the Ukraine’s Ministry of Internal Affairs, explained that the Division of Economic Crimes has got an international request from Interpol to send a request to the hosting company. After sending this request to ColoCall, the broadband provider decided to stop working with the BitTorrent tracker.

In the meantime, a criminal investigation was started against the operators of the tracker: Burlakov revealed that Mexico had initiated a criminal case against the Demonoid operators. The BitTorrent tracker is being charged with intellectual property rights infringement.

Last year, Mexican authorities raided Monterrey, the capital of the north-eastern Mexican state of Nuevo León, in order to apprehend one of the operators of the notorious P2P service. In result of that raid, access to Demonoid in Mexico was completely shut down.

At the moment the spokespeople can’t say whether the investigation is being carried out against the same person who was arrested last year in Mexico or a different one.

BlackFalcon avatarWe need to get behind Demonoid, and figure a way to help. I believe this is a time where we need to dig our heels in and draw a line in the sand. How dare the Ukraine do this, how dare they go along with the U.S. regime. This is ridiculous.

skreamer avatarWasn't demonoid a private? If so this entirely proves a point I made earlier to clamo who said the pressure on torrent sites would vanish if they all went private. Private trackers are not a safe future. Anything where I connect to an anti-infringement monitor is ropey. Just what is the future I don't know but I feel file sharing needs to move from P2P. Although its a risk DL from the likes of rapidshare vs ET (with UL credentials and threads attached to a torrent) I feel safer from the anti infringement mob in doing so as its still torrent sites getting most of their attention.

skreamer avatarBlackFalcon...but what can we do? I make no bones about it I think 'they' will beat us because they have the money and power. People are often wanting to see what they can get out of it. The people who "presented Demonoid on a platter" no doubt have done so because they can/will get something out of it for themselves. File sharers also get something for themselves (free stuff) but we lack the power and money to fight them to the ground and bite their faces off. I think a lot of people are still in denial about the threat we as P2P face. Yes cut a hydras head off and three will rise. But what happens when you kill a hydra dead.

No avatar@skreamer: yes demonoid was privet but also had a open site and tracker, I was also told that the privet site and privet tracker was mixed with the open one and well that's a BIG NoNo. but um... "Private trackers are not a safe future"...and leavening them open is? LoL
every privet site that I am on has never been mentioned as a target nor attacked.

@GGTBod: peerblock does nothing, hence this take down still happened. don't you think Demonoid users and staff used peerblock? but they were still tracked, and taken down. peerblock is soposta BLOCK them from spying on you, but like Ive stated before IT DOES NOT WORK. the only thing I noted that that software did actualy do was show you ALL the IP's that are sposta be blocked and show the ISP's that they belonged to. in the list included IP's from timewaner cable, comcast and AT&T. and some other ISP's that were not soposta even exits according to the FCC.

@DON: if so ET might be next.

but this is odd, if they did reside in the Ukraine, as Mexico is in a completely different part of the globe.

_Pound_it_pro avatarthe flow of money in the world doesn't discriminate between borders or races, between nationality or cause. just because investigation isn't mentioned doesn't mean that nobody is watching...in a world that is becoming much closer together in so many new ways at once is bound to experience growing pains. artists are becoming used to utilizing a new distribution method, companies have zeroed in a cash cow in bit torrent litigation, and the politics are just starting to get serious on a GLOBAL scale, and the general population is getting used to the idea that the lables/lawsuits/A.K.A "corporations" are doing everything they can to prevent a positive change in favor of a very lucrative business model.
So what can the average joe with about $20 and its still a week till payday budget? do we spread the word and show utorrent to the neighbor..and his brother...and his buddy too..so that they would have to prosecute every i.p address 3 times over and overwhelm the machine by volume? Doubtful.
Do we come to places like the ever so awesome extratorrent to voice our discontent with our peers? try to find a public mounting and force a change? and dont kid yourselves, they prob screen e.t like everything else just to watch and "keep an eye on things" wouldn't you?
we know the rich people dont wanna stop making tons of money but the day will come when they will have to change and grow with the rest of civilization..or we would still have beta tapes and phonographs.
but in the end have we even really decided what "we" want...i mean free content and the ability to screen the crap and save hard earned money is nice. but where do we take it from here? when the drama is done and the smoke clears what is it that we hope to emerge the victor?
while the community is being exploited at the moment by those who can, how do we make the face of what is being done so public that the world has no choice but to find a proper place for a truly useful thing and end the b.s back biting that we "fear" at the moment?

No avatar@GGTBod: proxies, VPN, and seedbox is best, "the problem with seed boxes is that some hosts don't allow open BT" but if you can't afford them then privet trackers is best as they are much more secure as you MUST log in to a SSL secured server to even see whats on the site. but yes ANY body that uses open BT with out some kinda secure encrypted connection is @ risk. hell Ive even started using proxies. see the big problem with peerblock is that if YOU are able to see the incoming sopsosta be blocked isp's and the ip's SO CAN ANY BODY.

I was also told by a friend on a privet tracker that they installed peerblock on a computer and tested it on TPB and yes they STILL got a cease and desist note for downloading a movie.

GGTBod avatarF*#k that it is a bad gamble where the odds are stacked heavily in favour of the movie producers and marketers, you rent (or even worse to go to cinema) 10 sh!t movies to every 1 good one, since file sharing anything worth the experience i go to the cinema (after i know it is worth it) sometimes several times for the same movie, all the shit gets deleted and does not inspire a 50 bucks cinema visit where i get [email protected] for snacks and drinks so bad i'm amazed they get away with it without a gun

skreamer avatar@clamo. Use some sense. If I said private trackers are not safe it should be obvious I also think open trackers are not safe. If you read what I said "Anything where I connect to an anti-infringement monitor is ropey" ie torrents are ropey (see Utorrent peers tab for the gory details).

The thread general chatter brings me to something I have asked in the past and gotten no replies and may never get a reply because that knowledge is held back, and for a reason, but: How do the anti-infringement people operate? Can they let loose an automatic logger program, run it overnight and use that data or does a real human being need to be witness to the content distribution? Although I've been on the web since the 1990's I've never been approached about copyright issues so have no idea about the details presented within a cease and desist notification. Does its contents offer any insight?

@MRclassictorrent. Fair point but of the movies I've watched recently I'd have been wasting my money. I wonder, given a movie is purchased and is marketed to a certain end, what Blockbuster would say if you returned your 'Comedy movie' DVD for a refund on the basis it was not funny. If I bought say a flashlight that was so dim it was useless, ordinarily I could return it as it was not as described or fit for purpose. Ha ha would be funny if we did have a legal right to do so. Sony produced the movie, pays for physical stock, distribution and we still get free (and in this case high quality) movies. Hell it would be cheaper for them if we did torrent the movie. (just a bit of whimsy folks).

skreamer avatarand BTW I was a member of the two big adult torrent sites in the past - empornium and puretna. Both private. Both had to close down. I had ULed torrents to Emp myself and know they were private, even though sometimes torrent search engines would pull them up in the results.

No avatarDemonoid is a semi-private site and has always been so, that means he is open for registration once a month and always has been, you just had to work out when it was open. That was the problem too many suspicious accounts, that should not have been opened.Even webpages leading to Demonoid site with microsoft office 2010 etc... downloads it should not have happened. I for one will miss the site very much but I also know he will be back. With a vengance...

ET got all the new shows, good & bad, clear pictures, sound,
Demonoid has/had alot (near anthing) of hard to find media.
the choice to watch what i like, ADD FREE!(more or less)
The choice to listen to non sanitized media with the F-word in it.
The option not to pay high retail, rental prices.(For Shonky A-grade

That money goes to my Net provider & food.

Now, just when im happy again, they shut down our Demonoid!
my user information , as best as i know,
is always recorded by my net provider,
also buy those faceless men with very large hard drive space.
They get everything, even if encrypted! I just takes them time
to decode the secure stuff.

Thus the need for time-consuming Decryption vanishes.
So does any anon... anomimity... Anonysismusness... Privicy.

Im old enough now that threats like this
dont make me fear them as much as i used too

No avatar@skreamer: on the peers tab? LoL only ppl on the tracker "that is privet" can see them. and you did say privet trackers are not safe. LoL the hole point of a privet tracker is that it is PRIVET. and according to the information Ive heard about "empornium and puretna" the sites were not shut down do to the entertainment industry, they were shut down cause they couldn't afford the server upkeep and right before there closer they were hacked in to. and if search engines were pulling them up and displaying there content they were not truly privet. the log in and sine up page will show up no matter if it is privet. but in answer to you question YES the can use auto software if they wish just like any one else can.

@josefene: "Demonoid is a semi-private site and has always been so" no it has not. long ago it used to be completely privet. it used to host the files it shared.
to gain access to it you had to get invited from word of mouth on the streets NOT the web. invites were given out @ comic cons and @ bars. this was such a long time ago......no one remembers....this was well before BT, p2p software and even ftp software was used. remember back when AOL and prodigy and MSN used 14.4 modems? its that dam far back. if not even farther back when BBS was the internet. Demonoid was OLD folks.
