The United States of America, which famously doesn’t even know that it was Tim Berners-Lee who invented the world wide web, has refused to hand over control of the Internet to the United Nations. The latter wants to bring in a global treaty and bring the worldwide web under its control. There were suggestions that the UN would tax large international telecommunication companies to ensure that the world is better connected.
Nevertheless, the news is that the United States will submit its own formal proposal for the December conference held by the ITU (International Telecommunications Union). Terry Kramer, the special envoy for the talks, has opposed the suggestions by Russia, China and other countries to expand the authority of the outfit to cover the web.
Kramer announced that it will introduce regulation, adding that the web has grown because it hasn’t been micro-managed or owned by any government or multinational group. In the meantime, the United States is worried that the December conference, scheduled to be held in Dubai, could seek changes that would threaten the openness of the web and its multi-stakeholder model. The US is afraid that it would grant the governments greater authority to filter or censor data, which is exactly what the Russian Federation and China want, and is also becoming part of policy of such Western countries as the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand.
The most worrying part for the big American technology companies is suggestion to the committee to call for taxes on web traffic to pay for a worldwide improvement in infrastructure. Of course, this would hit American businesses which are doing their best to avoid paying tax.
The December conference is aimed at updating a 1998 global telecom treaty, with ITU secretary general highlighting that he would be seeking a “consensus” approach instead of bringing each suggestion up for a vote.
Terry Kramer is hoping that he may lean on the EU to back the plan of the United States to keep control of the worldwide web. Apparently, the rest of the world also accepts the fact that the United States controls the web and has no interest in improving the Internet by taxing rich American companies either.

Excuse me but FCUK the U.N. and what they want. Jettison that useless, impotent collective out of Manhattan and relocate them to the shores of Tripoli instead. Then have nothing more to do with them.

Hell too much to say, so I'll just summarise: Can of worms!
BAH! I wonder how many Europeans, Chinese, or Russians, know who Tim Berners-Lee is... Of course the U.N. wants to control the internet and of course CHINA and RUSSIA (Who BTW censors the internet in their countries) want to control the internet. KEEP THE INTERNET FREE!!!
the internet is for the people keep it free

Keep the internet free!?! What, as in stop censorship!?! Censorship is already here even with the US in control. It will continue to get worse with or without just the US in control. We got about as much chance of keeping the internet free as I have of getting my left nut sucked by kate beckinsale whilst jessica biel sucks my right nut whilst my nob is sucked by jessica alba and angelina jolie. What we all need to do instead of hopeing in vain whilst we get dictated to by governments pretending to be democratic is everyone cancel all internet subscriptions untill they behave themselves and quit messing with us people who simply want to watch a film etc. I hope aliens come down from somewhere and kick the sh*t out of all the governments and their cronies for being the evil minority scum that they are, take over and govern properly and fairly, get rid of money etc and allow torrenting to live and let live. yeeeaaahhhhh
as soon as the government censor the internet even more everybody will cancel there internet because it will be pointless keeping it and then it will be the government that look the arsholes when they have no money and SOLYD i know what u mean about kate beckinsale ive got her on my ps3 wall

"The United States of America, which famously doesn’t even know that it was Tim Berners-Lee who invented the world wide web"
This person clearly does not know the difference between the "INTERNET" and the "World Wide Web".
Educate yourself before you place your name on shat articles

all about the money always have always will
Clearly the article makes it sound as if the problems facing the internet are the fault of "rich" American companies. You wouldn't be here on the internet at this time if it wasn't for some of these same companies. There are innovators everywhere in the world, but face it, without American innovation thus far and Hollywood, you'd be watching shat rate films on 8mm and on BBS systems with 57k modems. As corrupt as American government and business is, they aren't the only ones and don't forget it. Even if you do, it still doesn't change the truth.

Er, I believe the Internet is a bunch of servers wired together like one large telephone system, and the WWW is one of many 'protocols' or ways that clients (users) communicate. The beauty of this setup is that no one can really control it because by law no country can take away our right to communicate electronically, and without content that we can use, we won't go online. In fact, users themselves can shut it down or destroy businesses with software. No profit can be made from it unless we, the users, decide to pay. The energy companies can force us to be customers because of our 'present' dependence on oil, gas, etc., but we can opt to not go online at all if the content is only for profit. The telecoms can only rent you access, but no one can force you to buy anything. Throw in a decent encryption scheme, and they can't even sensor us.
If I wanted censorship I would advocate putting control of the W.W.W into one countries hands, but it definitely would not be those of the Americans. These same Americans that invade sovereign countries to install their own concept of democracy which leads to secular violence and country-wide destabilization after they have committed terrorist acts and genocide on the civilian populace all in the name of freedom, when in fact they have kept freedom an alien concept to all but themselves for the past decade and even incarcerated their own who have tried to object to the so called war on terrorism and those that do not agree with their Global agenda to dominate the world including their Cyber strategy which is not a new concept since it is ongoing since the NSA / CIA whitepaper on global cyber strategy 2001-2011.If left unchecked America will impose its own self styled and self righteous bullsh1te credo upon the rest of us and I for one will refuse to pay for an Orwellian big brother dictatorship that restricts my freedom ,monitors my movements and tells me how to think and what I can say and do,I won`t pay one red cent and will turn to war driving using any open router to do anything I want and not pay for the privileged of having my privacy breached by a faceless clone at Fort Meade or anywhere else.
Tim Berners-Lee not only pioneered the HTTP which gives us the WWW but also at the head of (W3C) which develops the web,he is English although he has worked at MIT.He was honoured as the 'Inventor of the World Wide Web' in a section of the 2012 Summer Olympics opening ceremony in which he appeared in person, working at a NeXT Computer at the London Olympic Stadium. He tweeted "This is for everyone", which was instantly spelled out in LCD lights attached to the chairs of the 70,500 people in the audience. The Americans see the WWW as theirs to control and manipulate but TimBl said it right, its for everyone.

Us keeps it we get to many acts to stop piracy
somebuddy else take it and we censorship and taxes
which is the greater evil here or are they both
P.s. i do not know who Tim Berners-Lee is
Since someone brought it up the Internet was created for the military during the cold war for the use by perhaps a few hundred computers/modems,the world wide web was created for civilians in the 1990`s and now 40+ years since the conception of the Internet and after many innovations they think to take over control of 1000`s of networked servers in 100`s of countries and monitor 10`s of millions of foreign nationals computers, that to me is going one step further than the Chinese have ever gone, total corporate fascism on a global scale, they do not own the networks outside the USA and they constantly are trying to impose and restrict peoples usage and freedoms of use to protect their own interests regardless of other peoples rights.
As bad as things and I agree with some posts the Internet DNS Servers needs to stay in the US at this time.
As correctly posted previously the UN is nothing but a bunch of self serving evil politicians fighting for their own agendas.
Many of the countries in the UN only see this as a means of revenue since the EURO is failing and in the toilet.
In reality only the DNS Servers are in the US.. Who really owns the internet? The mega Telecommunications companies do - telephone companies and more.
As for this BS claim for Taxes for infrastructure by the UN is again just BS.. The infrastructure they claim that is needed is again would be provided by the Telecommunications companies who are the ones with the real monopoly on the internet. THEY are the one's who sell internet services to jobbers who like Time-Warner; Turner; AOL and more resell it to you and I AND to other ISP's all over the world.
The internet is evolving and I predict that DNS Servers will be no longer needed since Bit Torrents are the next step in that evolution.
SO ITS COME THIS I MAKE A COMMENT AND SOMEONE TELL ME TO SHUT UP BECAUSE I DONT KNOW THE DIFFERENCE OF THE INTERNET AND WORLD WIDE WEB I THOUGHT THIS FORUM WAS FREE TO SAY WHATS ON YOUR MIND NOT TO GET SHOT DOWN?

Reading the statement by ancientwolfgr made me chuckle. Without the innovations that the internet is based on then no-one would have an internet at all. To sit here and read yet another narrow minded flag waving claim to a global system designed and created by the whole world is another reason to visit these pages less and less. As for Hollywood, when they stop churning out films that are either inaccurate and insulting historically, an excuse for racism (especially Disney), culturally insulting, unfunny puerile teen comedies or plain remakes of previous shite then maybe I'll consider watching something from there.
Cant help it, I was on this "infrastructure" while other places still had mud sidewalks. I'm the last one to wave a flag, and only when it's being torn down. I wont accept geography as an excuse to lump anyone, including myself together as an excuse to point blame- theres corruption in every corner of the world, and NOBODY has the balls to admit they are just as much to blame as anyone else. Oh, and these stereotypes come from somewhere...

In a proper article, it would have researched which groups ACTUALLY control which parts of the "Internet", like iCANN. These articles are useless and bias. The very first sentence is factually incorrect and would never be published in a reputable paper.

The UN is one of the most corrupt establishments in the world. There are many experts who would say the UN does more harm than good these days. There are not many things that the the UN gets credit for doing properly.

WOW ! Some strong opinions in this post, some inaccurate information, a world famous Englishman (rare now) and several countries claiming ownership of an old American 'ArpaNet' network that has grown to a monster worldwide 'free' server. No, I'm not going to include my opinion, it's irrelevant.... But this 'ownership' argument will keep on building until each country has the censorship it wishes I fear.

I wish people would realize that all this is a distraction to keep the everyday people divided and opinionated, believe me when I say that all of the people in charge of it all are not divided, you know the one's with the most money who loan it out so that things can even move. You really think that things are the way they are because we want them that way? We are all being programmed and conditioned to be what is wanted. Remember a house divided CANNOT stand, and it seems their houses are standing steady
|They wanna harness and take away a freedom. A very popular freedom of speech,,hence when have we ever let any bully,,,even when we do or don't help out other countries? You know russians despise all the cat vids,,those will be the 1st to go.||
