uTorrent client was originally launched 7 years ago, and in 2006 was purchased by BitTorrent Inc. At the moment the application accounts for 125,000,000 active users a month, thus being the most popular P2P platform in the world. BitTorrent Inc. recently announced that the next update will bring a new feature, which will make the client ad-supported.
Becoming the most popular file-sharing platform involved plenty of work and dedication. In result, the old uTorrent turned into not just a BitTorrent client, but an extensive tool to download and upload from your machine or remotely, stream while downloading, rate, comment, and much more.
A week ago a forum post announced that the application will become ad-supported, which would add to uTorrent a fresh approach to creating a no-nonsense and free torrenting experience. Although BitTorrent already generates around $15,000,000 annually, this number will certainly go up after the application becomes ad-supported. This means that the advertisements will be integrated into the application in the form of “featured torrents”. The hopes are that they will generate revenue by advertising relevant content like movies, games, books and music. One more use of “featured torrents” is to inform the Internet users of news, while promoting independent content creators.
BitTorrent Inc. explains that these new changes mark the company’s next step towards looking for difficult balance between keeping its lights on and providing a positive user experience. The upgraded version of uTorrent will display a featured torrent at the top of the users’ torrent lists. This space will be used to offer different types of content. The company promised to work towards bringing the users offers relevant to them, including movies, games, music, software, and everything else that you could find interesting. The company admits it may not get it right on the first try, but promises to continue improving the efforts based on users’ feedback.
The new feature which may upset someone is that uTorrent will now use user’s IP-address to pin-point their location. Still, BitTorrent Inc. promises to guarantee privacy anyway. The users, in the meantime, don’t know yet what they should feel to an ad-supported application.

The only problem with using an older version of the client is that the trackers may stop supporting older versions since uTorrent has so much "pull" in the BitTorrent community.
As for using a different client instead of uTorrent, I know that if I do end up having to switch clients it will be to Deluge or to Tixati - but I'll hold off as long as I can.
Personally found that Vuze (formerly known as Azureus) and Deluge work the best for me and do not contain spyware and both feature DHT,If one is particularly lazy and doesn`t wish to add block-lists in Azureus/vuze which is not that hard TBH then Deluge is for them as it updates the latest blocklist at the click of a button, saying that the one with the most features is Vuze and whether beginner, intermediate or advanced it is a long time proven Java client with no hidden nasties.
I use Transmission, simple and light. tried utorrent on OS X but Transmission wins.

I use Tixati..I don't know how..but that gives me better download speed than utorrent or bit torrent..but the ad/featured torrent in utorrent may help in growth of torrent world in hindsight..just an opinion..not sure about it..

Halite Deluge qBittorrent Tixati are all great ad-free pieces of software and if ur not afraid of Java and heavy weights go for Vuze.

As an alternative has anyone tried the Dutch University Tribler yet ? It`s as fast as U Torrent and it can`t be shut down .
It was nice knowing you, uTorrent. They'll be gone within 12 months now.
Anybody still use BitComet??

i use vuze and it works way better than uTorrent www.vuze.com
so you all know VUZE is crap beyond crap , and if your not using a hacked utorrent by now your a dumbasses as well
and why are so many of you still broadcasting your IP's ????....makes no sense
also for the smart ones out there just take the adds off utorrent yourself ...don't be lazy
Slash you are a twat!

BitComet is so intrusive it's not even funny ! Leaves way too many traces on ur reg

Normally I avoid anything ad supported , and probably will change client. But there are a couple of sound reasons for the move. At the minute torrents are "bad" despite being used for lots of legal stuff (promoting new artists, linux distros etc). Imagine a scenario where the latest blockbuster is showing at the cinema- the distributors could push a 5 minute high quality clip to show the people downloading a shitty cam what they're missing. People like Roku could push ads for their boxes as they know the people using it have digitized contact they would like to stream. Apple could push adds for cloud storage for the apple tv etc etc
All this would help bring torrents from the current perception "its a tool only pirates use" to a place kind of like dvd recorders- yeah you "CAN" do bad stuff with it but its useful for lots of "good" - which is good for all of us
i am confused bcz i dont trust add supported stuff.

Azureus did the same thing if I recall, and then changed it's name to Vuze. I never used it again after, but I did suggest to uTorrent that they should implement a rating system like Azureus had, that they have now implemented, which I think is great. It's good when you can find out before you download something if it is any good, it saves a lot of bandwidth i.e. Password crap.

this is old news. I knew about this months ago. and its only on v3.0+ witch is band on most privet trackers anyway.

@slashdiekill: LOL you don't make ANY sense. you CAN'T hide your IP that your isp assigned you. now you CAN hide you computers ip that is assigned by your router by most over the net but it IS visible some ware.
btw folks Azureus and VUSE are the same dam thing and it SUCKS!
a bit torrent software that can't be shut down? LOL it can if they pull the plug on your internet LOL lot of good it does with out that LOL
@clamo "you CAN'T hide your IP that your isp assigned you" Seriously, you think that can't be done?
posted by (2012-08-18 02:13:57)
@Darkan9el: how the hell ya gona hide it? the modem MUST connect to your isp's servers with a IP address. so if you are hiding it you are not connecting to your isp. so you are paying for your isp but not using there servers? LOL they y pay them at all LOL.
Has anyone told suavenz his posts are filtered and nobody sees them?

W o w thats sooo bad ads on utorrent coming guess they really need the monies.
Using vuze and peerblock with win7 here and all is well; vuze is sooo much faster/lighter then utorrent; tryed utorrent but it stunk really slowed me down so using vuze till something faster finally comes along. . .

Using utorrent version 1.8.5 here and it is nice and speedy and doesn't do anything i don't want it to do peerblock also good to have.

I use to use Azureus, and when it changed to Vuze the speeds dropped quit a bit,
and then i was directed to utorrent, and found a new home with great speeds.
Now i am getting as high as 4 GB/s on some torrents, I will stay with what i have and not update.
but if this stops working, i guess i will either have to update or find a new program.

fundraiser for that risk, why not? is like hunting us online.
|I know some platforms of utorrent use a proxy that hide your ip address. So i'll probobly end up using one of those but i really can't stand the adware,i'll just see how it goes everything is working now.So i'll keep what i have until it stops working! People always want to change things i say if it's not broke don't fix it!||
