Well most of Earth’s population has heard about St. Valentine’s Day commonly shortened to Valentine’s Day. I would like to give a some information about the holiday so that people could know what exactly is celebrated and how it all started.
Well, we can safely say that this is a very old tradition which can’t be attached to a certain year. The only reliable information is that the tradition started from a pagan festival called Lupercalia that was a way to celebrate the start of the spring and pay respect to the Roman god of agriculture Faunus and the founders of Rome by the popular legend, Romulus and Remus. But at that time, around 498 A.D., pope Gelasius declared February 14 St. Valentine’s Day trying to use the pagan tradition to “christianize” the people of Rome and spread it throughout Italy and Europe.
I don’t want to get too much into the details of how the feast were held or where it started because all sources tell the story differently and the common things in them are the facts that it did not start as a way to celebrate love or intimate relationship with a loved one, or to show a way of caring about someone, it was purely a festival for the celebration of the start of a season that slowly through the ages turned into a celebration of this magnitude.
The first signs of St. Valentine’s Day as we know it today started in England and France in the Middle Ages when it was commonly believed that February 14 was the beginning of bird’s mating season, and that added to the idea to celebrate the that day as a day of romance, partially producing the phrase “lovebirds”. The first Valentine’s greeting that exists today has been written by Charles, Duke of Orleans who wrote to his wife while he was held imprisoned in the Tower of London. A few years later on King Henry V hired a writer to compose a valentine note to Catherine of Valois.
Even though it started that early the popularity of the new tradition grew slowly showing the first real signs of prosper in the seventeenth century. By the middle of the eighteenth century it was a common thing between friends and lovers to exchange handwritten notes as a token of affection. It was the true era of the Valentine’s Day cards when people put much effort and time into a card that contained only a few words and still needed to look nice and full of caring. At that time it’s assumed that Americans exchanged hand-made gifts with their beloved ones.
In 1840. a woman called Esther A. Howland began to sell the first mass-produced valentines in America. After that the industry started to focus on the holiday, and the popularity grew almost exponentially. And what started out as a hand written card that said “I Love You” Turned into a gesture that is so common that it lost the true message. Nowadays the balloons, big basket of red roses and chocolates took over. Well, even though I said that the statistics show that women buy more valentines than men, and that is based on a poll made throughout USA, Mexico, Canada and Western Europe.
After saying a few paragraphs about the history of St. Valentine’s Day I would like to give a few ideas for the members that have not yet decided how to surprise their loved one on the day that should reflect the affection, dedication and respect.
First of all, I would like to point out that the main thing is to show that you care, not to show how many money you can spend or how rich you are. The main goal is to show your feelings, and the best way is a nice quiet dinner, made by two and consumed by the candle light, or giving your own version of the greeting card made by you, that should show that you took some time to make her/him smile, and feel special. Draw something nice, like a Cupid or a few heart shapes with style or make a mix CD or DVD, do anything that you are good at, something that shows your talent and feelings. I know that making the presents of any kind is not as easy as it sound but it’s worth for a special occasion like this.
Here are some examples:
I would like to give a chance to everyone to post here a suggestion about an idea for a present that would be nice for Valentine’s Day, and also would like to wish everybody a nice joyful February 14th with someone by their side.

Valentines day is a commercial farce. loaded on the shelves before the previous holiday,it i have seen caused more problems than good. If you think a woman is satisfied with a simple handmade card, think again. even unadmitted, lying beneath the that smile lies the thoughts of "cheap" she will compare her gifts to her friends and you better have out done them or for the next few weeks you will be tormented with hits of hidden comments of your lack of glitter, sweetness or those highly priced roses. So you will run out and buy these things because commercialism has convinced our mates that is true love. We do not celebrate this day, no inkstamped hearts, no glittering jewels,no chocolates or dying roses. We celebrate our love all year round. i refuse to be told what to do cause i love my wife. Do you really beleive he bought those thinking of you, he has to,it's the fear or the blocking of an angry mate. All my friends have tried only to be subjected to the "well she got " comments. Yes we celebrate this year round, she gets her valentines day many times a year, no one tells me i have to, i just stop one day and realise how much i love her and need her and then i will give her what i feel in the moment. Handmade or not she knows it was all my own doing. And all her friends are envious. So if you do something for her, make it your own, look away from the rest of the world and let your love decide, not society. And do it throughout the year on your own terms. Love is not a holiday, or bought and sold, it's free and thats what makes it so special. Happy Everyday to all.

Bravo human, you just showed that you did not listen in school at all, get your facts right man, it is called "pagan" because it is not Christian, not because it is wrong or anything. The facts are all RIGHT, so post your version and then talk like that k? I did my research not only online but obviously you didn't notice it. Thanks for the negative review by the way, it shows how much respect people have these days for an article that is done with some time put into it. Peace! If you are talking about the martyrs it is not the source of the holiday, it is just the source of the name. Read some, read some more and you will see. It is in the library, old school way.
You are one of the people because of who I don't post articles nowadays, no appreciation for the work that is put into an article, so I'm off the article section for a while.

I really loathe the marketed nature for festivals as old as civilization that is the norm in this day and age. It seems that as soon as a date approaches the compass in the west points to "due money" (calling at "no thought" and "stupidity" on the way) Nearly ALL pagan festivals have been taken over (re-marketed??) by the christian church, just look at mid-winter solstice. in fact it's a wonder that scholars are not finding parchment advertising spin-doctor jobs within the church a thousand years ago.
Do i need some suited idiot telling me via a hard hitting and fresh advertising campaign that "this" box of chocolates or "those" flowers are the way to prove i love my wife? I think not as I do it every day in little ways and a small card will suffice.
Thanks for the article and keep up the good work Zoran

lol my gf doesn't like this valentine's day she says u should love me every single day of ur life and only idiots forget to show affection daily . thats what she thinks and we are love birds 365days a year . if u do something which i like uniform something which everyone is doing on a particular day means ur not making him/her feel special if u want to make someone really feel special then choose a different day a different time a different style . Only then u'll feel u did something different .......again id say don't wear a uniform to say " i love u most ".

Bravo BBViking, obviously some need read more carefully, my mate of 25 years does not require materialistic gifts, as stated in my earlier comment, i, me, myself, alone choose to gift her with what i,me, myself, alone feel to give her. not the calender, not pressure and most certainly not society. if your mate truly believes that you gifted her soulfully on your own terms on that day then you have a hell of a woman. And if you think she is not materialistic in some way, then you haven't planned a wedding. Take her to a court house and say i do, all that should matter is you and her. we are all materialistic in some way, thats okay, as long as it doesn't blanket the words I Love You ! Happy Valentines Day to those who celebrate it, if in the least give her a Valentine Day every month and love her daily ! please respect others opinions, it keeps life interesting. thx
