Eighteen people have submitted complaints with the Advertising Standards Authority that a TV advertisement claiming that the ISP offered a broadband service without buffering was misleading.
The complainants claimed that they could still experience buffering. In response, the service provider argued that although there was a technical definition of the term “buffering”, the consumers misunderstood it and believed it was synonymous with terms “interruptions” and “delays” accompanied by the buffering symbol appearing on the screen.
It said that the purpose of the advertisement was to stress the frustrations the subscribers may have experienced when that symbol had appeared, especially during video playback. Virgin media wanted to promote the idea that faster broadband could eliminate the frustrations that its clients had when buffering occurred. That’s why the company said that the performance of its broadband services substantiated the statement that the subscribers could suffer no more buffering.
In addition, Virgin media explained that it requires download speeds of 1.5 to 4Mbps to stream video file for services like those offered by Internet movie streaming portals. The ISP pointed out that theoretically, by providing a consistent download speed over 4Mbps, the company could support video streaming with a greater likelihood that buffering wouldn’t be experienced by the users.
Therefore, since users could achieve such average speeds from Virgin Media, they were less likely to suffer from buffering and it was true that subscribers could say good-bye to the problem.
Nevertheless, the Advertising Standards Authority was not convinced, saying that while there could be some factors affecting buffering beyond the control of the ISP, it can't be said that the average user would notice this. The outfit also pointed out that without qualification, the advertisement could be understood by the public to mean that buffering in general would be eliminated by the fibre-optic broadband service. As a result, the Internet service provider has been ordered to remove the advertisement and make sure it isn’t shown again in its current form. The Advertising Standards Authority also recommended being more clear about the advantages of its services next time.

Never mind buffering, they've allegedly fixed my broadband problems three times in the last 2 days and I still can't send emails by logging in through their homepage. Thank goodness someone came up with a quick and easy fix on the Virgin Media Forums !

18 complaints is that alls it took. Technically, it is usually your OS that causes probs like that or the browser or what ever you`re trying to view not the connection, its a 2 way thing. This is laughable.

im with bt have infinity such slow and bad performance i left virgin media for bt wish i had stayed with virgin media id download at 10mb with bt 1 mb if im lucky
lots of factors to streaming including load on servers other than virgins so can never be a hard and fast guaranteed service which was the upheld complaint as is more commonly the case with bandwidth variations whereby viewers are told they have up to 60mb broadband.(up to,being the operative words)when at some periods they may only have 2mb.
I think its the name:)Still untouched and unaware of what to do. ( Adults Obviously)
The speed is pathetic. I was supposed to be on a 100Mb connection (TWO MONTHS) later still getting 60 then 70Mb. So far lame excuses and techs who don't speak English try and explain Hindi to me Hmmm ( No offense intended to any Indian person/s)
What stinks is the FAIR USAGE POLICY I mean wt f .. Why not implement this on the bill you cheeky twats..
You miss one payment you get two charges a tenner and a fiver added to your bill. Compliments of VIRGIN MEDIA You ask for a refund on loss of service and disruption to your livelihood :)They use big words and try to confuse you. Like Fantastic and Brilliant come on twats plain English would suffice
I am gonna open a new company hmm been thinking of calling it "EXTRA VIRGIN AND STILL UNTOUCHED WITH REALITY".

Been with Virgin Media since their conception and NTL and Cable n Wireless. Never had a prob.
Yes they do charge for late payments, non DD payments but for me their service has been pretty
damn good. Got money off for loss of service, had problems with speed now and then but I am
not one of those whinging types. I understands that things do break and can talk to people
without getting on my high horse. The rest of the ISP`s for me are paled in insignificance.
Learn to read it helps you understand that nothing is perfect. Can`t beat Virgin
