The country’s government has come to a right decision – they figured out that the plans to filter the worldwide web aren’t really worth it.
It’s been years Australia started to debate Internet censorship scheme, the local equivalent of the Great Firewall of China. The government claimed it was terrified of terrorists, paedophiles and unchristian religious faiths who could try to subvert their way of life.
Of course, this caused a bit of a stink down under and finally all mention of it was dropped during the last election. Today the Federal Government has officially abandoned their plans to introduce the law for obligatory ISP censorship.
The Internet service providers will be directed by the authorities and the Federal Police to deny access to “child abuse portals” that are on an INTERPOL block list. Media reports say that Communications Minister Stephen Conroy made an attempt to make this sound as a crackdown. He claimed that the country’s largest broadband providers have been issued notices that would require them to block these illegal portals according to their obligations under the Telecommunications Act 1997.
Conroy also said that the Federal Police will start sending notifications to smaller Internet service providers and will work closely to help them meet their obligation under the local legislation and prevent their services being used for unauthorized activities. He believed that it would have been more useful than any mandatory censorship law.
Still, it amounts to scaling back of the initial plans. Although it might not stop much of the way of child porn finding its way into Australia, it means that the government can pretend it is fighting this without having to go too far.
