The rumors are that Pope Benedict XVI is going to turn to social media. After Twitter audience has largely reacted to David Cameron joining the microblogging service with heaps of scorn, the Pope has an even wider audience ready to harass him in a tweet.
Apparently, the online atheists will try to lap this up, and the experts are predicting the influx of parody accounts, anti-Catholic hashtags, and popular paedophile jokes. This means that it will be a PR nightmare for a while before the audience switches to something else.
According to media reports, Benedict himself isn’t a fan of technology and most of his speeches are written by hand. That’s why the anti-religion mob might go nuts without having to consider hurting his feelings. Although he won’t pen the tweets himself, he is supposed to personally sign them off before sending.
The content for the tweets will be made up of the Benedict’s weekly audience, Sunday blessings and reactions to the most important world events such as natural disasters. Back in 2011, the Pope officially gave his blessing to social media during the World Communications Day. He admitted that although social networking offers extraordinary potential, Facebook and Twitter might bring risks with them as well.
The Pope warned against one-sidedness, self-indulgence, and false representation, and all of the above could arguably be levied against an individual believed to be the successor to Saint Peter and spending much of his time in a palace.
