Russian service named Videomore, originally launched as a social TV network, is currently trying to become the local version of Hulu.
Two years ago, CTC Media Inc. has started Videomore – a service offering such functionalities as chat and sharing through the TV-set. Along with these features, the service also aired catch-up shows from CTC’s Home and Pepper TV networks, but now the company wants even more.
CTC Media Inc. announced that they have concluded a deal with RTL’s National Media Group, which was supposed to allow both parts air catch-up and archive shows from the latter’s channels – Ren TV and Channel 5.
Of course, for Videomore it is a great leap, particularly that they have claimed an average of 9,000,000 monthly unique visitors for the first 9 months of this year. Nevertheless, the Channel One of National Media Group, the country’s top broadcast channel, wasn’t included in the deal. According to Slava Sinadski, the CTC’s strategy chief, the past 2 years have given the company invaluable experience and a better understanding of the modern audience’s demands. As such, the company has come to the following conclusion: its future success would depend on the following factors: first of all, the availability of high-quality new content; and secondly, the ability to advertise on TV, as well as the overall scale.
As you can understand, the first two criteria have always been at the company’s disposal, but it can considerably expand the scale of its business by simply attracting new strategic partners which include media holdings, TV channels and right owners.
It is unclear whether this attempt would be successful or not, but the matter is that it would be of no surprise if such partnership fails. For instance, Project Kangaroo (which is an attempt of a UK broadcaster to create a single JV portal) was crushed by the regulators on basis of advertising antitrust. Russia can only hope that Videomore will have different fate.
