Although the company claimed to offer its users a kind of democracy, the social network still made the changes it wanted to its policies. In defense, Facebook blamed its users for not bothering to vote on a topic which received almost no promotion from the social network.

A couple weeks ago, the company opened the polls in a bid to provide its users the chance to vote on how the social network processes people’s information, as well as a plan to get rid of the website’s policy to allow users vote in the first place. However, Facebook has now claimed that participation in the polls wasn’t high enough to reach a consensus from its users.

Facebook’s governance page reveals that about 670,000 users have taken part in vote, with almost 88% rejecting the new changes. Nevertheless, the total number of votes they needed to stop Facebook doing as it pleased was short of the 30% of the website’s billion active users, which the company required to make the vote count. As such, Facebook has taken this as a sign to do as it pleases, though people who did take the time to vote asked the company not to make the changes.

Facebook recently caused an outrage after telling its members that it would be making updates to two policies which regulated the network. These policies were the Data Use Policy, which explains how Facebook collects and uses information when members use Facebook, and the Statement of Rights and Responsibilities, which explained the conditions regulating the use of services.

In other words, with the low vote count, the company simply did what it liked, while placing the blame solely on its members. As such, user information can now be shared between Facebook-owned services – for instance, Instagram. In addition, the company will remove controls over who can message users.

Gaspode avatarMost of the people using Chavbook, especially in the UK wouldn't know or care what data mining or data trading is about. When you explain to them that Chavebook is all about sales and targeted marketing they look at you as though you have two heads. Let the sheep be shepherded while those who can actually out think a cheese sandwich avoid it.

skulljockey avatarI used to use facebook quite extensively. But started getting daily "sermons" emailed to me from a NA/AA group. I was a member of this group for numerous years and it helped me when I relocated from Seattle. Then after I moved and bought a house about 20 miles away I was bombarded with emails. A great deal of these were from I did'nt know and finally my android was friggin over loaded with messages. Many of these were quotes from the Bible which I already read on a daily basis. I'm no thumper and don't throw scipture at anyone. My final resolution was to cancel facebook which was to bad. I didn't realize how many sites use facebook to function or to sign in to them. I am pretty over it now but verry ticked off at the time. If you are wondering about the measure I resorted to fix the problem; I took off my e-mail off the account, removed my photo, made sure my cell or any other way to contact was removed and any other measure I could think of I did. What did I end up with was a useless page of B.S. It defeated the purpose I got a facebook account in the first place which was to have a way for people I've lost track of over the years to have a safe? place to contact me. It worked well except for one thing that I wanted more than anything which was to get back in touch with my Daughter

kingtiger01 avatar@skulljockey, just went through that. i have a facebook account for the same reason...

@Article:

When is facebook going to realise, you can only force youre user base so far before they stop using youre service. I stopped being active on FB back when Timeline was introduced. Now im seriously considering just getting rid of it all together. Whats the point of having a place to allow people you PERSONALLY know a way of contacting you. When everything you say do or feel is going to sold to some Data-Grinding company for profit and youre info shared publicly anyways.

eNdEmiOn avatarI wish people would stop using it. The problem is sometimes you just can't get around it. These days it may very well be required to sign in somewhere else than FB itself. At least anonymize all your social media profiles not just FB. Google/youtube, Live, and plenty of lesser known services are just as bad.

Jedimastersky avatarFacebook have a lot to learn about giving out members details to third party partners.
My Facebook details are set as all Bogus anyway as I learned a harsh leason with FB before.
I created a Bogus email address just to use for FB and all my personal details are incorrect.
I will never get crap email, spam and so on and I dont browse FB other than Friends pages, I dont add apps and I only use it for contacting friends and for then to contact me so they wont get much info out of me to sell on.
That's the way to do it!

No avatarthe company i work for regularly scans employees facebook pages to look for "conduct unbecoming" and will fire you for any comments they dont like. that company is CN railway, as well as many others, almost seems like a great site for employers to nose in on their employees "off duty" lives and control you there too.
terrible site... like a registry for shit-bags to find victims...
i dont participate in FB, but merely using your kroger, k-mart, sams,etc.. card builds a nice peofile too, what you eat, when you shop, what time, how much, you use alcohol? need pharmacy products?? they have it all categorized, and analyzed.
the web; Google (especially)is enough to leave a nice biographic profile of yourself just by doing your daily surfing.
NWO knows exactly where you are, what your thinking, it's just a matter of when to come and collect you.

Darkan9el avatarAs with pretty much all of my online dealing 99% of it is false info, from addresses to phone numbers to emails, I have spam emails that are receivers to see what junk I get from a site etc when they pass the 6 month test I will move it to one of my main emails, its as good a spamming filter as you'll get. I use facebook to warn people about their privacy issues and most haven't got a clue. I'll bet fb didn't email everyone on fb to invite them to vote? because I didn't receive any notification, I only knew about it because I read online a lot.
