According to the entertainment industry, music piracy throughout the globe costs the US $12.5 billion annually. Moreover, the Institute for Policy Innovation released the report saying that copyright violations are taking over 71.000 jobs away.East Bay Ray, Dead Kennedys’ guitarist, has discussed this issue with a music industry lawyer and Chico State’s adviser.

East Bay Ray claims that technology companies like Google, Pandora, and MTV abuse and persecute artists’ work – Dead Kennedys expressed this opinion more than twenty years ago, when they have released a song “MTV – Get off the air”.

The musician also pointed out an important issue which the entertainment industry isn’t ready to accept – that there’s a considerable difference between sharing music with your friends and the mass-production of the artists’ work to get profit. In other words, the musicians do all the work, but the record labels get all the money. That’s why artists prefer to let people get their works for free than sell them through music stores – they don’t get any money anyway.

In addition, the number of independent artists has dropped twice over the last decade. They want to get their music to people, but don’t know how to do it so that it was fair to everyone.

At the same time, tech companies put up together copyrighted material, while having the benefits of paid advertisement. Another issue is the 1998’s Online Copyright Infringement Liability Limitation Act; which amendments protect hosting entities from any responsibility for copyrighted content, if the copyright was violated by a customer rather than the company itself. In addition, the musician thinks that tech firms are trying to make creative works free and nullify any existing copyright legislation, with Google being the worst of them. The punk star also called Spotify corrupt and Google – unfriendly.

In response, one of the Swedish foreign exchange students working with the KCSC radio and SOTA Productions argues that how they view Spotify and how it’s used in the country is that Internet users really pay for the service. This is what’s happening now and you can’t just rewind the current situation.

Although this debate could have continued forever, it stopped at some point with standing ovations and follow-up questions.

No avatar"music piracy throughout the globe costs the US $12.5 billion annually" IF $12.5 billion was true HOW is the RIAA able to STILL create MORE music? this would imply that they are still lying about how much they actually loose directly to file-sharing. LOL yep just keep the lies coming RIAA

trialNerror avatarDoes anybody (other than lobbied politicians) ever believe what the MAFIAA spews out of it's junk-hole?

We need more musicians to come forth and say #&%$ the industry. But most of them are puppets and afraid they'll lose their 5 minutes of fame. Well, if you're a good musician you'll have nothing to worry about. However, I think those such as Gaga, Beiber, Lambert, Skrillex, LMFAO... they should be scared because without a puppet master (music industry) telling the world their music is good (when holy hell it is not) then they'll have to find other work like flipping burgers and salting potato sticks.

No avatar@trialNerror I actually like some skrillex, lmfao, lambert and gaga songs. I don't like beibers music but I admit he is a talented little bastard.

Now the RIAA should learn how to flip burgers and ask "would you like fries with that."

Boghound avatarPerhaps the RIAA should read the latest figures for official downloads for 2012 in the UK instead of making ridiculous statements.

fusseltier avatarwhy can't they just admit, its their no talent artists that make music that people don't want that makes them lose money...
if they had talented musicians that knew how to play instruments, and write songs rather than sample older music, maybe people would want to buy their product...
same thing for the movie industry, they cry they lose money, but if thats true, how did avatar become the highest grossing movie of all time, even with copies on the net?

No avatarThe music industry believes that every album illegally downloaded is a sale lost. What complete and utter nonsense. I doubt if more than 4/5% of those albums would ever be bought and what the industry loses sight of is that fact that many bands come to public attention via illegal downloads. The days are gone when musicians made millions without leaving the recording studio. They now have to tour more extensively and perfect their live performances for a more discerning audience.

Embolism avatar12.5 billion is obviously their potential profit but in a global recession this figure would not be achieved so is a fatuous and inflated figure without credibility. Moreover for those that do download a single track and who then if they like it go out and buy the album are also in the unmentioned statistics as it could be argued that because of Bit torrent applications artists work is getting freely aired by millions of potential consumers contributing to aiding the music and film industry to a like amount and that if they did`nt spend billions in their witch-hunts they might actually realise profits from file sharers.

Embolism avatarThe same argument can apply to those that download cams and if liking the film even though monochromatic with overly dark regions and audio hiss go out to the cinema to experience said film in 3D with surround sound, when the storyline is not written by Basil Brush as it appears to be from the screen writers in America today.Boom Boom!!
