Ian Cox, one of the top Linux kernel developers, has recently called Fedora 18 the worst Red Hat distributive he has ever met.
The expert is currently employed by Intel and has switched to Ubuntu after having disastrous experience with Fedora 18. He claimed that the Fedora 18 installer is simply unusable, and the updater is buggy. In the meantime, the default desktop has been eviscerated to the point of being less useful than a chocolate teapot. Finally, Cox claims that instead of fixing the bugs in it the developers have added them. The expert complained that it couldn’t even manage to write valid initrds for itself instead on one machine of simply bombing into a near undebuggable system error.
The matter is that Cox wasn’t the only one to complain. According to his comments on Open Saucy bog, there are a lot of users having bad experiences as well, though not as bad as Cox’s. For instance, one of the users pointed out that his upgrade was painless once he worked out why Fedora 18 was breaking his install scripts. He explained that the installer does randomly fail and he didn’t like that the new Red Hat had no CLI for network configuration.
Another user admitted that although he was a huge supporter of Red Hat and Fedora, he was disappointed with the recent release. He said that many items which worked great with F16 and F17 for some reason wouldn’t work with the latest release, no matter how much time he spent trying to get them to work. As a result, the user went back to Debian with the hope that those problems would be resolved soon and he could put Fedora back on his laptop. One more user complained that his complaints to Red Hat weren’t going anywhere, and filing a bug report seemed to be useless.

its only been out about a week or 2 ,does Microsoft ship any operating systems which do not require updating after installing, for such a developer not to be able to do a simple workaround by simply going to yum and typing yum install update instead of waiting a day /week or never for the updater to kick in is pitiful at best, but to decry it completely is not going to make him popular fedora 12 had the same issue in its updating so no biggy for a workaround and install through terminal, while the bug gets worked out:)
I still laugh at bill gates launch of windows 98 and the BSOD.
Having read further it does say the fault was only on one machine so who is to say the o/s was not soley responsible for the write error, hmmm.
still on fedora 14dual boot with windoze and it runs sweet, secure and fully functional

I strongly believe that Fedora is working to fix these annoying problems and continue to improve its Linux distribution. After 30 years in IT business, I personally respect CLI in Unix and Linux, it is about time to move away from CLI for network configuration because everything is available.
We whoheartedly appreciate all the talented individuals from RedHat, Fedora, Debian, Apache, Android and wonderful people in Linux community. Sincerely, JoeGI50
well said, the Intel developer that decried it obviously doesn`t appreciate the work that goes into each release and with each release of windows which I must remind some is not free(far from it)there has always been need to update and patch their releases from win98 to win7 including the release of xp which was quite good after all the service packs and updates were added over the space of 10 years it most certainly did not roll out perfect by any stretch of the imagination.
Maybe he spoke out harshly because he loves linux so much and expects more than above average. Not every time that someone criticizes is it meant to harm. He is right to point out the slackers, perfect example is how many people go on American Idol to try out to get on the show because their whole life their family and friends lied to them and told them they sounded great, but in reality they sound like cats screwing behind the fence!
I would also like to point out something about Microsoft. So many people love to hate on their work, but in reality it has always been quite functional, and quite frankly has made home computing what it is today! They built up the consumer base that made it profitable for the home market. No not by themselves but they lead the way, and yes they also helped to drive linux developers to create and build better OS's. I think there is definitely shady working from the Microsoft camp but they know how to adapt and make a market, when they are hacked they hire the hackers, Sony just prosecutes, Look at Xbox whether you like it or not, they hired the modders and hackers to the system and incorporated their inventions and hacks to make the system better, and the Xbox 360 emerged! Honestly I cant wait to see the next system.
