Microsoft has recently gone to Munich claiming that the city wasted a lot of money by dumping its software in favor of Linux. At the same time, the software giant refused to provide proof, so everyone would just have to take its word for it.
According to both Microsoft and HP, the German city made a mistake when it calculated that switching from Windows to Linux saved Munich millions. Apparently, Munich has annoyed Microsoft by claiming that it saved over $14 million up to date. The software giant carried out one of its special Total Cost of Ownership studies, which found out that Munich would have saved more than $57 million if it had stuck with Microsoft.
The German weekly Focus, which had the figures in question, claimed that the software company wanted to say that if Munich had stayed with Windows XP and Office 2003 instead of choosing Linux and OpenOffice.org, it would have saved a fortune. Microsoft confirmed that the Munich’s own calculations didn’t consider all migration costs and compared the migration to a decade-old Linux version with a migration to a newer version of Windows (for instance, Windows 7). In case Munich had stuck with Windows, it wouldn’t have needed any new software.
In the meanwhile, the report found out that 25% of the desktops are still running Windows, as not all apps can be migrated to Linux. The results of the report were leaked to the press by one of the HP employees, but neither HP nor Microsoft are now willing to disseminate it more broadly.
Most of industry experts admitted that they couldn’t understand Microsoft’s reasoning, saying that it would be tricky to see how a Windows deployment can be any cheaper than a Linux alternative. Perhaps, the reason Microsoft wasn’t releasing the report is because the software giant suspected there were some mistakes in it.
After all, the software giant might be going back to the good old days when it used to print bogus reports about the total cost of ownership of Linux with fabled figures simply for marketing purposes.

if they should have stayed with XP then why did microsoft stop all support for XP and make people change to windows 7 when most did not want to?

Linux is beast, faster, secure, does lots more and best of all its free
sour grapes from Microsoft,it never will accept its corporate attitude of money, money, money does not impress the end user.France was fed up with the extortionate cost and the free spyware in the o/s and binned MS some years ago costing multi-millions in annual licences now they are whinging about Munich,Linux is free and in many, many ways better and more than comparable to windows in every way:)
windows dual booted with fedora serves me very well, although I only use windows for the odd spot of gaming and that I do in Linux as well with Nexuiz
Last part of the story is like that:
Since the report was commissioned by Microsoft, HP also declined to comment, said Anette Nachbar, spokeswoman for HP.
"I would struggle to see how a Windows deployment would be cheaper than a Linux installment," said Roy Illsley, principal analyst at Ovum, who added that he couldn't imagine why Microsoft wouldn't release a study that actually proved that Microsoft is cheaper than Linux. "I would suspect that they read it and they suspected that there are some errors in there," he said.
After reading Focus' report, Karl-Heinz Schneider, head of the Munich's municipal IT service [email protected], immediately asked Microsoft to provide him with the study, he said today. However, Microsoft also refused to send it to him, said Stefan Hauf, spokesman for the city.
"What I could gather from the press so far poses considerable doubt on the validity of the study," said Schneider.
The study for instance overlooked the lion's share of the project's savings, almost €7 million, by not considering the licensing costs that would have been incurred when Microsoft products would have been used, Schneider said.
Furthermore, it is not true that no new software would be necessary if the city had kept using Windows, he said. "A major trigger for the decision to test the operating system architecture was precisely Microsoft's announcement that it would drop support for Windows NT," he said, adding that Windows NT was the city's standard OS at the time.
"A migration to a new operating system was therefore inevitable," Schneider said
so, without games and other few multimedia application windows is no longer better than Linux
and when compared to licensing costs Linux is the winner. How much bogus report The Software giant may produce it wouldn't convince common people.

I did not like Linux at first. Switching from Microsoft to Linux is simply great. Linux's community has done an awesome jobs and huge progress has been made during the past 3 years. There are many wonderful Linux OS and applications available at reasonable price. Soon same cool games and nice applications are available from both Linux and Android. There is no such thing as free but it is great to support your developers. Innovation comes from unlikely source. Microsoft is boring and expensive.

i am using linux mint since last 6 months , first its very secure ,windows is nothing in regard to security.
yes windows is easy to start with , but linux is not that hard plus when you learn linux, then you can do any thing with your o.s. totally great
doesnt matter for me. I am a ubuntu from last year and it is running. moreover virus free.
I personally know nothing about Linux, just chatter on different forums, and your comments here. I find it hard to believe that if Linux had all the capabilities and functions of Windows that it would be free. And the fact that the person posting this article provided absolutely no factual basis for either side of this argument, it just sounds like they're both blowing hot air. Maybe they can all go get jobs with the Obama administration, as that's all he ever does as well.
