It seems that the war between Microsoft’s Bing and Google is hotting up, and Redmond has launched an especially nasty advertising campaign. Media reports claim that Microsoft is accusing Google of using bad advertising practices on its Gmail.

The software giant has started a so-called “Scroogled” campaign, hitting out at the search engine’s use of algorithms to scan Gmail users’ messages and serve advertisements based on the keywords found there. Microsoft regards this as safe territory and has criticized the search engine for doing this in the past.

While dusting off its old tactics, the software giant has conducted a study in order to show how Internet users feel about seeing adverts based on what was found in their personal inboxes. The study covered more than a thousand of participants and claimed that a vast majority, 89%, don’t think that e-mail service providers should be allowed to scan the insides of personal e-mails for target advertising.

According to Stefan Weitz, Microsoft’s senior director of Internet services, the study participants were skewed a bit more to the 18-to-34 age demographic most likely to use e-mail. In response, Google admitted that it has been scanning e-mails with advertising algorithms since the very beginning of Gmail service and that it has made its practices clear.

The matter is that if users want to get rid of the annoying adverts, they have to pay the company $50 for the professional version of the mail service – it’s like Outlook.com, where users should pay $20 to stop seeing adverts on their inboxes. However, if they want to keep e-mail free, advertising has to be part of the equation.

This is a well-known fact, and Google spokeswoman Samantha Smith confirmed that advertising is the only way to keep Google and many of the websites and services offered by the company free of charge. In any case, no human reads your email – it’s only being scanned for keywords by the machine.

However, as part of its Scroogled campaign, Microsoft is gathering signatures for a petition titled “Tell Google to stop going through your adverts”. Stefan Weitz claimed that Microsoft has yet to decide what it will do with that petition with a target of 25,000 signatures. At the moment, it only has the grand total of 800.

No avatarI read that Google conducted a test in which they uploaded some new search results as a test of Bing's search engine and found that Bing came up with the same results too quickly to have done anything other than tapped Google's search engine for the results. It wasn't proof that Bing used Google's engine but very telling and believable that Bing may be doing that.

skreamer avatarGoogle beats Bing hands down afaic for searches.

Also I use my brain (yes yes har har) to filter content. Where I see an ad 'forced' upon me, such as at the start of a youtube video or in my Gmail I will make a point of ignoring it.

Heydevil avatarThanx for the article Sam but I am confused- is this the pot calling the kettle black?

No...I think its more like the kettle calling the pot black
I stopped using Google and switched to Bing when Google surprised me one day by saying my favorite porn site no longer existed. In a frantic panic I remembered there was this other thing called Bing and I tried it and to my great relief there was my beloved porn site just where it had always been. So Google lied to me! And I've been a faithful Bing user ever since.
Also Bing has a cool new picture everyday. It doesnt take much to please me.

eNdEmiOn avatarAlthough I use bing mostly these days as I got fed up with google mainly because of the linking between google and youtube and the fact that logging out of youtube didn't also log me out of the other google crap.

They both suck as an email provider, although in this case at least gmail can be accessed trough IMAP and hasn't got a forced spam filter shoved down ur throat. Not that I use gmail although android forced me to get an account. But that whole thing of going trough mail what google does, should and is over here against the law, not sure if they take notice of that though.
