The multinational giant is going to spend a fortune in order to expand its already huge Googleplex site. Media reports claim that Google is getting ready to break ground on a 42-acre campus called Bayview. The latter is planned to be based around 9 structures, most of which will be 4 stories tall. Each building will be shaped like bent rectangles in order to make room for courtyards. They will also be connected by bridges, one of them leading to a green roof with an outdoor cafe.
Googleplex represents a whopping 1.1-million-square-feet campus, which has been designed to win numerous awards. The designs are based on the way the company’s employees are expected to work: for example, the search giant believes that most staffers will be able to work by natural light and without any glare from the sun on their laptops. In addition, Googleplex will be the largest office complex in the country, with all radiant heating, designed to save electricity.
The company didn’t reveal how much it will cost to buy all of this, but it must be a fortune. Google says that its real estate team relied on reams of data, observing every tiny detail like where the sun rises and sets, wind patterns, and the daily habits of the company’s employees.
Before moving to its own campus buildings, the company hollowed out the shells of buildings previously occupied by Silicon Graphics – a bit like a parasite. However, this new campus is located on the grounds of NASA’s Ames Research Centre, next to the current Googleplex.
Googleplex is expected to be completed in 2015 and the company claims it’s central to keeping top engineers. However, Google is not the only tech corporation which believes that having a nice office is very important: for instance, Facebook is currently building a Main Street to keep its employees happy, while Apple is building a “spaceship” campus. By the way, according to the latest news, both Google and Yahoo have decided that it’s better to keep workers locked in at workplace, rather than telecommuting, because the latter proved unproductive.
