Apple’s thermonuclear patent troll fight against Samsung seems to run aground spectacularly. Recently, a federal judge slashed a $1.05 billion jury award by over 40% and scheduled a new trial to determine Apple’s real damages. Media usually says that Apple won the patent claim in question, which effectively was over the rounded rectangle shape, when the patent war story is mentioned somewhere.
Indeed, Apple managed to convince the jury that the Korean corporation had infringed on its iPhone and iPad patents. However, the actual value that the jury awarded was a bone of contention since it seemed to have gone through very quickly and had failed to add things up properly. As a result, Judge Lucy Koh of the US District Court, Northern District of California in San Jose, has taken a decision to cut over $450 million from the jury’s award.
In addition, the judge decided that Apple and Samsung have to once again meet in a California court in order to decide how much of the $450 million struck from the damages, associated with fourteen Samsung products, should stand.
Lucy Koh believes that the jury had incorrectly calculated part of the damages and that a new trial should be scheduled to define the real amount of damages. The judge rejected Apple’s motion for an increase in the jury’s damages award and finally ordered a new trial on damages for the fourteen devices, including the Galaxy SII.
In the meantime, the ruling didn’t have a good impact on Apple’s image on the market – the financial experts noticed that shares in Apple closed down 2.5% on the back of the ruling. On the contrary, Samsung profited from the decision, as its shares increased 1.1% next morning.

|As trialNerror said 450 mil for something as simple as the shape is bs, if they sued because they copied there OS or something of that measure I could understand 450 mil being given to apple. This is just clearly appples attempt to cripple Samsung financially now that they are more of a threat and are slowly getting more and more people moving away from the iphone. First they lose the computer market to MS and now that the tables are turning in the phone side of things to Samsung they wanna ruin the company instead of releasing a competitive product I personally hope Samsung puts them 6 feet under for this.|
|Samsung is way bigger then apple. It's a billion dollar corporation.|
Just a attempt for greedy apple to try to pull down Samsung. I never
brought anything of apple. you can't even hardly hack one of their
products. charge you $100.00 just to replace a battery, lol. I guess
people just stupid enough to spend $700 on a iPhone just for the name.
