The Iranian authorities have found a way to cut off people who used VPNs in order to bypass the country’s ludicrous censorship legislation. Indeed, a lot of the citizens use proxy servers over VPNs in order to circumvent legal restrictions and hide their activities. The government claimed they have blocked use of the “unauthorized” instrument by closing down “illegal VPN ports” in Iran.
According to Ramezanali Sobhani-Fard, the head of Parliament’s Information and Communications Technology Committee, only legitimate and registered VPNs will be allowed to be used by the citizens. It’s unclear how much of this is possible, because the experts expect some opposition groups forming, which will work their way around any technology thrown by the Iranians at them. Moreover, the control of VPNs has less to do with controlling dissidents. Instead, it is more about forcing corporations to switch to government-backed products.
The country’s Supreme Council of Cyberspace is going to flog “official” and “legitimate” VPN services to entities which need them for security. In other words, all companies will have to run their businesses through government servers that will make them much easier to spy on.
According to Council Secretary Mehdi Akhavan Behabadi, by launching this program the authorities will be able to “prosecute” Internet users violating state legislation so that the Internet Filtering Committee is able to take offenders to national courts.
The Iranian government might want all its plans in place before summer, because a presidential election is planned for June. The industry observers expect that the government will make attempts to switch off the worldwide web in order to stop people complaining about the status quo and organizing opposition.

I agree with you, borjeston, that the people of Iran are generally very nice and respectful. I've met many in my travels throughout Europe and the US, and they as a whole have been very responsible people. However, the society is not respectful. As long as it condones a theocracy, where elderly men dictate the rules inspired by the Sky Father, there will not be real freedom. Excessive intertwining, coupled with fairly significant cronyism, poison Iranian society, making it far less than it could be.

Just get an SSTP VPN.
The US is heading in the same direction compliments of the Obama administration and our friends at the MPAA, and RIAA. This fully backed by large corporations like Sony, Universal Pictures, Warner Brothers, and the like. Not that all politicians from all parties aren't just as bad. As long as some large corporation is willing to pay up; there is a politician somewhere willing to be bought. "We The People" always suffer as a result.

Iran, China and others who are at the forefront of blocking VPNs: you may be pieces of human garbage, but thank you! Your fervent efforts are ensuring the creation of the most advanced, secure, undetectable, encrypted protocols that have ever been known. This is outside of the OpenVPN standard that is currently used by most providers today (which is currently being targeted). Some use SSL. Others SSH. And others, still, use SSTP. More and BETTER will follow, I'm sure.
You government idiots better start banning routers and computers real soon. Because your days in power are numbered.
