An outfit running a VPN service for Iranian clients announced that the attempts of the local authorities to block the service during the weekend have failed.
The country tried to block VPN ports all across the country in order to prevent citizens from visiting banned websites like Facebook and Skype, but the owner of a Brazilian VPN service claimed these attempts have largely been inefficient. According to Joshua Van Raalte, the users of the “Hide My Ass” free proxy haven’t been affected by the ban.
He believes that the latest attempt of the government at Internet restriction will most likely be fruitless. Van Raalte pointed that the block on VPNs was confirmed by a local protester on Facebook, which should have been banned in Iran.
In the meanwhile, the Chinese government has also spent many years and millions of dollars on technology which should have blocked VPNs, but yet they still get through regardless. In addition, the provision of proxy technology, instruments and software has so far managed to circumvent all attempts at censorship.
Over 1,200 Iranians make use of HMA’s free proxy service every week, despite that fact that it is officially blocked by the Iranian authorities. Joshua Van Raalte promised that “Hide My Ass” will keep supporting Iranian users as much as it can, because the company’s mission is to promote openness and the global freedom of expression provided by the worldwide web.

From a previous post I made a few days ago:
"I really need a good VPN i can trust, and fast!!!"
Damn right. And you can find a couple of very good lists on TorrentFreak.
You'll want one that supports OpenVPN at a minimum, with SSL and SSH as a bonus. They should have at least one router setup guide, since it's best to run your VPN on *ALL* of your devices- not just one computer. Kinda defeats its purpose if you don't. Also, make sure it accepts Bitcoin and really, you should be paying with that currency instead of with dollars through a corrupt banking institution. Another thing is it shouldn't be based in the same country as you're in. That means Americans should look to VPN services based outside of the US. And lastly, and probably most importantly, it shouldn't keep any logs. I don't think that last point needs to be explained. (The only criteria that Hide My Ass meets is that they have a couple of router guides.)
Privacy is a God-given *RIGHT* that needs to be protected. But you need to exercise your own rights and freedom in order to protect it. The government is the very last place you should be looking for protection in this area.

Go vpn's goto love this . .
well i think this just makes government of Iran more eager to start a national intranet
When I was in Iran, most of the VPNs were blocked already when a new VPN appeared the Iranian government in a few days would get the IP address and block it. It is not easy to circumvent their blocks with non approved VPNs.

"It is not easy to circumvent their blocks with non approved VPNs."
Tell that to the millions of Chinese who circumvent the Great Firewall of China every day with their unapproved, illegal VPNs. Their Communist Party is waaaaaay more clever and capable than the Mullahs of Iran will ever be.
|for the people of Iran here is a free solution-addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/anonymox/ checked it works on box I was working on the other day and perused all the isp blocked torrent sites, lol.||
