It seems that Google is interfering in the Swedish language by putting pressure on the Language Council not to include the new word “ogooglebar” in its list of new words. The word “Ogooglebar” means something one can’t find online through a search engine. In response, the Language Council pointed out that it wasn’t just about their definition of the word, as they also tried to describe how users define the word. However, Google had opinions about that.
The company wanted the Council to make clear that the word only applied to Google. Google’s lawyers got involved to make an attempt to influence the way of defining the word. Finally, it was more hassle than it was worth and the word was removed in the end. In fact, this was the very first time the Council has had to remove a word, and it seems to be at the bullying behest of one of the wealthiest IT corporations in the world. Of course, in a resource battle, the search giant outgunned the country’s Language Council.
However, the council pointed out that regardless of whether Google likes it or not, the word still exists in the language and Google can do nothing about that. It’s up to the native speakers of the language who decide if it will remain – if the word exists, it can be used in case of need. This is something Google cannot decide.
This case mirrors Intel’s attempts in the 1990s to copyright the letter “I”. Fortunately, they failed, as well as Google who initially tried to get rid of the word “googling”. Finally, back in the 1990s NCR also wanted to put a stop to the word “tower” because it had a tower computer and claimed it was the first.
Swedish citizens believe it is incredible that the search giant tried to control the Swedish language. In the meanwhile, the Swedish also have a verb “googla” which means “to google”, but it seems that the company wouldn’t have anything against that. Still, it becomes scary how everything is increasingly controlled by multinational companies, but it’s crazy to believe that they can govern someone else’s language. It’s clear that people will still use the word, whether it’s in a dictionary or not. Moreover, “ogooglebar” may leap Sweden’s borders and make it into the international lexicon thanks to Google’s attempts. As for the search giant, it had failed to provide any comments over the issue.

Ironically if you Google the word "Ogooglebar", which literally translates to "Ungoogleable" in English, you get plenty of hits. So as it turns out "Ogooglebar" isn't "Ogooglebar".

if not Swedish you wont understand
Waste of got damn money and time.
Like they said Google needs to look at he past and realize even with money it is worthless to try to control things outside the company especially the dictionary. I remember when they didn't want the 'GOOGLE' in the Oxford dictionary.
...to me it seems that Google would rather have people Inter-fear them. However Mr. (Don't be evil) got hit by Apple for their recurring cookies and will soon be hit by others thanks to some video recording of the same recurring/permanent cookies they like so much. @Hidden attackers ...come again I have an offer for you you can't refuse ...ciao belli e non dimenticate di visitare la Sicilia che e' bella.

Thanx for the article Sam, Google is still trying to take over the world.
@firefoxsniper I agree with you. Google is tracking who you call, when and where you are not to mention every www site you go to. I always found it odd that FF is better at showing utube clips then Chrome. I am doing my best to avoid google but what are the options out there?
It must be said that there are many forms of English from latin words to Germanic,American English to county dialects like Dorset and very few speak grammatically corrector the Queens English as its termed (despite her being descended from the German House of Hanover)is it not expected that in each generation dozens of new adjectives ,verbs and others will not be created through the influence of 3rd parties.I think Google should be honoured that they even considered using them in their language to begin with.

@Embolism Yet again you post a comment without reading the article! They speak Swedish in Sweden not English.
@9 I used English as an example <Giraffe> since colloquial English has to be the most illegitimate language in the world as well as the most spoken.
@9 please since you have cited I have failed to read other articles without reading point them out, since I read every article and English being my native language was my basis for a retort at googles objection at no time did I say that it was the language to which google objected in the article, although given the predisposition of the Oxford English dictionary to add American slang to the Language it should be.
once again I close repeating:.I think Google should be honoured that they even considered using them in their language to begin with.
@9 It may also interest you since your neck is so long you wish to stick it out amongst the languages spoken in Sweden. English, romani, scanian, german and Yiddish are also on the list not counting sign language

Comment#1- How is the world meant to know what you are using as an example? English is NOT the most spoken language in the world.
Comment#2- The inclusion of American slang in the English dictionary has nothing to do with this article, my comments or even your own comments.
Comment #4- Thank you, the long neck comment made me laugh, very clever. But I never commented about other languages spoken in Sweden.
|I like the fact I am tracked, surely google and the mob must all realize by now I dont do adverts, they dont appear on my computer or my phone and I dont allow them to be posted in my home. I dont click links to shite I unsubscribe to everything and block/report spam from culprits everyday and if I want something I search myself. How long will it take for them to really get the message?||
