The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), in cooperation with Washington DC based Friends of Privacy, has complained about the ease with which American government is allowed to access information in the cloud and everywhere else.
The two outfits have alleged that US legislation provides the government freedom to access private information stored in the cloud or other place, in the name of national security. Though the Patriot Act has been the subject of debate, the most important authority available to the American government is the FISA Amendments Act of 2008, which allows the government engage in dragnet and suspicion less monitoring of communications between citizens and non-citizens in the United States. No court order is needed to access the data, but the court can authorize the government to get year-long surveillance orders from secret courts in order to acquire “foreign intelligence”, which is an ill-defined thing.
Nevertheless, Section 215 of the Patriot Act is currently used in another way. Some senator admitted that there is a gap between what the people think the legislation says and what the US government secretly thinks it says.
For example, National Security Letters are subpoenas issued to Internet service providers, cell phone providers and credit card companies to require them to hand over data relating to counter-terrorism or counter intelligence investigations. However, the FBI is alleged of underreporting its use of NSLs and of collecting data about people several times removed from the subject of such investigations. 22% of audited files are said to contain unreported legal violations. Thus, secret interpretations of legislation by some authorities can make it impossible to know how invasive its surveillance powers truly are.

|THE BIG BROTHER STATE HAS ARRIVED....AND GONE CRAZY LOL|
|Since the NSA/CIA whitepaper of 2000 it has been the Global Cyber strategy of the USA (2001-2011) to use whatever methods it sees fit to securing the internet on a global scale using overseas partnerships as well as domestic and since that time has used the threat of force, coercion and bribery to get what it wants. The patriot act is just one of the many ways they illicit information and cut through the red tape to get evidence then when evidence is sifted through and they do find things that you can be held accountable for they drop the terrorism BS and prosecute you for filesharing, tax evasion or anything else that may make such a violation acceptable. The land of the Free has not been such for a very long time as the cross dressing J.Edgar Hoover might agree, privacy and human rights mean nothing in America or any other despot country.Hitler had the SS,USA has Homeland Security.|
