Speculations that Amazon might be working on its own smartphone gathered momentum when the online bookseller announced it had hired a 20-year Microsoft veteran known for working in its Windows Phone unit.
The now ironically named Charlie Kindel used to be a top suit, who was hired by Microsoft back in 1990 to lead its Windows Media Centre and Windows Phone developer platform. Kindel left the software giant a couple years ago to join two start-ups in the Seattle area.
Charlie Kindel could only say that his new role at Amazon was something secret, but admitted that he would be leading a new team going after a totally new area for the company. It seems that he will be looking for cloud and mobile developers and testers, along with program and product managers. Actually, Kindel is not the first mobile Microsoft employee lured away by Amazon within the last year. This suggests that rumours of Amazon working on a smartphone may be true.
Some industry experts had expected a Kindle smartphone to launch in 2012, with Foxconn being named as working on the hardware. In the beginning of 2013, Amazon acquired Ivona, a computer speech provider, who could be used to create a voice assistant. In the meanwhile, Amazon chief Jeff Bezos hasn’t confirmed the rumors, but has recommended the experts to stay tuned.
Media reports suggest that Kindel’s experience in building platforms for mobile app developers and products meant to deliver digital music and films around the home may also have other uses in the company’s activity, like cloud storage and streaming media. Anyway, a smartphone is still being tipped as a great way for the online bookseller to deliver its digital media, physical products, cloud computing services and hardware to consumers.
It is known that Amazon has used its Kindle electronic readers and its Kindle Fire tablet computers to boost sales and foster greater customer loyalty by simply making it easier for consumers to purchase books, music and films. Today it is a known fact that smartphones are becoming increasingly important for people’s shopping, because today more and more customers prefer to browse e-commerce websites while on the go. It is also a convenient way to compare prices while shopping in bricks-and-mortar stores.
