DEA Can Read iMessages

The US Drug Enforcement Agency seems to be messing with Apple customers by pretending that it can’t read their iMessages. It was a few days ago that CNet obtained some DEA memo suggesting that the messages sent via Apple’s own system were untappable and therefore “frustrating” law enforcement.

The “leaked” memo complained that encryption used in the iMessage chat service had stymied effort of DEA to eavesdrop on people’s conversations. It was said that some recent criminal investigation was affected and the DEA warned that due to the use of encryption, it appeared impossible to intercept iMessages between two iOS devices, even though they had a court order.

In other words, it was proof that the Apple was so superior that it even had law enforcement unable to match it – so, if you wanted true privacy you had to purchase an iPhone. Pure advertising, to put it shortly. However, there was some faulty logic in the memo – while it implied that the company had some brilliant security that even the federals couldn’t crack, it also implied that Jobs’ Mob had no control over its own network.

It is a known fact that Apple can boast end-to-end encryption, but the company itself holds the key, as it means that when you boot up a new iOS device, you get access to your old messages – in other words, the company stores the data in the cloud and is able to decrypt it in case of need.

It seems that the “leak” only means that DEA isn’t able to get iMessages by going to the mobile operators, but it surely can get them by going to Apple directly. Moreover, iMessages may appear even more prone to surveillance, because SMS messages are normally stored on mobile operators’ database for a brief time, while iMessages seem to be stored by the company indefinitely.

Other media reports suggest that the memo was leaked to CNet in order to falsely imply that iMessages are almost impervious to government snooping. However, there are two plausible theories: it may be part of the federal’s effort to convince lawmakers to force all communications systems keep backdoors for wiretapping, or it may be a try to convince criminals that iMessages are safe and force them to use them falsely believing the messages are protected. So, don’t text about the corpse in the trunk even if you own an iPhone.

Embolism avatarjust one more fallibility in using Apple as well as not being able to store or download your own music to the things without jail breaking them and paying for everything through itunes, little wonder android is so popular when you can buy a smartphone for 50 GBP and have 1000`s of free applications, transfer from pc all your music and video and play free games till the cows come home.

SyKoTiK avatarI don't know what you're smoking, dude, but you can transfer your own music/movies to iPhone/iPad/iPod without jail-breaking. And, as of the even the most recent count/review, the Apple/iTunes store has far more apps/music/movies than the Android Marketplace does.

Recluse2011 avataryou have to be pretty big time if your selling drugs for them to get a court order to get access to your messages on such a program, as its a rather long and expensive process through the courts.

giraffe avatarSam this article is total BS. Some conspiracy theorists post some cr*p on the www and you put it here as news- you have to do better then that!

@embolism you asked me to point out when you are posting BS, well you are again. This article is about the DEA reading messages which they can't and you go on a diatribe about how you are too stupid to put your music onto an ipod, as SyKoTiK pointed out your wrong-again. Why don't you tell everyone again how English is the most spoken language in the world!

giraffe avatar@Jedi And what tech company is not out for profit? Google, MS, FB, Sony, Dell or how about Intel and AMD. Apple and other for profit companies have had a great influence on what ever computer, phone, tablet you are using- so something good has happened. If you don't believe that this story is BS, don't take my word for it and search it yourself.

Embolism avatar@4 not BS giraffe I have several friends who have been unable to get their music onto Ipads from their Pc`s and others who have had to Jailbreak their phones using Cydia to get applications for them so please do not give praise to proprietary phones and Ipads that cost the earth to start with and squeeze the users for money to listen to what music they already have and for apps that are not supplied through Apples store since they like Microsoft are exploiting and monopolising a niche in the market, why else would people go to the trouble to jailbreak them otherwise. Embolism avatar@4 if you read the article again you will see the fallibility with Imessages is that the messages are stored indefinitely so whilst the encryption and security maybe high end having such stored information inspected at a later date using software to flag keywords etc may be less secure for some and as the patriot act and court subpoenas open all doors Apple will roll over and supply such information in a heartbeat as will Microsoft and any other Corporate entity within the USA,an interesting article SaM,thanks.

No avatarWhy is there no link to the actual memo? Why not a link to Cnet's article? Why have a title that is exactly opposite of your opening sentence?

Dude, go take a journalism class at your local college. You will learn some basic things that high school newspapers learn.

Embolism avatar@12 whilst I agree with you that there should be a question mark or even an exclamation mark at the end of the title the article does speak for itself and whilst the DEA may claim not to be able to intercept the encrypted transfers of individuals the corporation which stores the communication can and will given 2 words-patriot act.People worldwide are at this moment watching news of Canadian rail bombers and Boston bombings and this will give impetus to any enforcement agencies investigations now or in the future with or without a warrant/subpoena.if you wish to have a link google will find you one here is one to save you the trouble. //yro.slashdot.org/story/13/04/07/2029233/is-the-dea-lying-about-imessage-security

Embolism avatar@2 It must be said that I do not own nor would ever buy an Apple product since i can build better for 1/3 of the cost and that such products should be able to transfer music ,video etc as you say, but such is not proven to be the case in one of my friends cases and even with a certified Apple technician he never resolved the Issue with his Ipad and was told that if he jailbroke his phone his warranty would be invalidated,my only involvement with A Mac was in forensic data retrieval for a professional photographer when his Mac software was unable to retrieve the data on a damaged 500 GB HDD,Others I know have used Cydia for their apps since they are not happy with paying large sums for their product and not getting the Apps they want or like to use regardless of the Amount that Apple have in store.

Embolism avatarwww.cato.org/blog/untappable-apple-or-dea-disinformation this one supports the assumption of disinformation giving the technica support and mud puddle explanation of the assertion that the DEA cannot break the end to end encryption, but also proves irrefutably that such messages are stored and can be read through Apple since such can be retrieved from storage when required.Passing such news here is SaM`s bag but since such is syndicated it takes but a second to corroborate or refute it obviously those that cry BS did neither.

giraffe avatar@embolism Apple doesn't make budget computers much like BMW doesn't make budget cars and if you look at tablets and computer of similar specs and build quality made by Samsung, Sony, Dell, Toshiba or MS they are all within 5% of each others pricing- so Apple products don't cost the earth. The copyright restrictions on music was imposed on Apple by the music industry- if you don't like it, this whole website is set up to pirate anything. I'm a huge fan of open source and have written code for Ubuntu and arduino and while I hate Apple's business model and attitude- MS, FB, Google, Sony are all doing same thing.

on 4/9 you wrote "English has to be the most illegitimate language in the world as well as the most spoken." BTW Mandarin has 4 times the English speakers and Spanish is the 2nd most spoken language.

I don't need to reread the article since I got it the first time. Messages being stored in the cloud is no different to Google or MS storing emails on servers as you pointed out if the DEA has a warrant every company will open doors allowing the DEA to listen to phone calls read texts, emails and messages. If the DEA doesn't have a warrant then cracking the encryption is useless since the DEA can't act on the information. The original article on CNET claims that the DEA can NOT crack the encryption so a bunch of conspiracy nuts claim that proves that the DEA can- hence why I call BS on this article.

You claim you can build an imac or ipad for 1/3 the cost, great I'll order 1000 from you. BMW and Ford make cars with 2L engines, do you think the are the same? You finally admit that you don't use Apple products so why do you keep bagging them? The average price for apps is $1.50 but your friends can't afford that but have iphones and ipads- again I call BS.

Embolism avatargiraffe read apples TOS and see they themselves will if they have reason to believe messages are inappropriate or of a security risk hand them over to law enforcement(read the links supplied)2nd the mark up by all manufacturers of PC`s are as you say within 5% tolerance of each other, but what you do not say is that they make a 200% mark up on what the components cost in the first place to build the unit and then factor in shipping and tax so building your own will and always has been cheaper.3rd since when has Spanish been the most common language? as I stated mandarin is no1 with English a close 2nd at least in this link Iam sure there are others,BTW do you work for apple?,since you are such an arbiter for them?Nice to know you are or have worked for Ubuntu ,if you were interested which I am sure you are since you call people stupid amongst BS everything then you may like to know I was a developer @sourceforge.net who had input in the creation of DHT and I2P one of which I am sure you use in your current torrent program going back to 2004 when I disassembled the top 10 torrent programs at the time and reviewed them all for security flaws. So keep being the keyboard warrior knocking SaM and myself since you believe in your own superiority to me your just another Pleb

Embolism avatarGiraffe quote:You finally admit that you don't use Apple products so why do you keep bagging them? The average price for apps is $1.50 but your friends can't afford that but have iphones and ipads- again I call BS. once again YOU failed to read @ 8 before crying BS whereby I state that they jailbreak their phones because apple despite its abundance of apps do not have the ones they want or like and those they do have they charge for, when you pay between 200 and 500 GBP for a phone you do not want to spend yet more money to make it serviceable or for amusements but want the whole package this is not the case as You have yourself stated. Much the same as BMW and Ford which both will make a 2 litre car, but both use speciality non standard tools requiring either you to buy them or to take the vehicle to one of their service centres a practice adopted by ford from BMW so would buy neither and buy a vehicle that did not require me bending over every time the car was due a service.Which is just one reason I ride motorcycles and no longer drive my Mercedes.

giraffe avatar@Embolism I agree DIY is cheaper but is not always the same quality as mainstream products.

I never wrote "Spanish been the most common language"

I can't understand how people hate a company when they haven't used their products- whether that be Sony, Samsung or Mercedes. I have never owned a Mercedes therefore I can't tell you whether they are good or bad, but you can. I'm glad for your work @sourceforge.net but the reason I called you stupid is that you claimed you couldn't put music on an ipad then you admit that it was a friend who couldn't do it- if this was true then Apple would not have sold 60 million ipads last year. Your other friend who doesn't want to pay $1.50 for an app, would have to pirate apps regardless of what phone he uses. I am here on ET so I pirate stuff too. I'm on Android too, so what are the apps that you can't get on itunes? I was very disappointed that Sam would repost an article like this, A memo claiming the DEA can NOT crack encryption proofs that they can. It makes no sense at all. I don't know why you need a burner phone but if it suits your needs then get it, though getting a phone that can use android 4 would improve your over all experience.

mwd25 avatarWow,I have to agree with giraffe. No offense Embolism, but wow,who are these friends of yours? Iphone Ipad and Ipod have to be the easiest things in the world to operate. Im sorry if you dont make enough money to get one, though I have found that most people that hate on apple really just cant afford their products and it makes them very bitter. Not that they are all that expensive.I have about 84 apps on my Iphone and all but 3 of them were free. I have about 1.5 tb in movies and tv shows, all free and never had any issue transferring to my Iphone, about 340 gb of music, all free, also no problem in transferring.I have a Iphone 5,a Ipod nano and my old Iphone 3g,none of them ever jailbroken and all work flawlessly. Its a shame your friends dont know how to work the iphones they had and you cant make enough money to part with a couple hundred dollars so you can purchase a superior product. Keep working hard though....maybe someday?
