Microsoft Strongly Recommends XP Users to Upgrade

Since only one year of Windows XP support is left, Microsoft again asks users of this OS to upgrade to something not so ancient. One of the most stable operating systems ever developed by Microsoft has been around for ten years and is still used on 15-20% of PCs worldwide, including mine.

The software giant is going to cut off support for the venerable OS on 8 April 2014, thus giving users one year to either upgrade or get ready to face more vulnerabilities and security risks. Nevertheless, XP is still incredibly popular, particularly among SMBs and home users. All of them feel it gets the job done and therefore don’t see a point in upgrading to Windows 7. But you should understand that Windows XP is older than iOS, Android, Facebook and YouTube.

In addition, the problem is that Microsoft sold millions of XP licenses for first generation nettops and netbooks based on Atom processors, this being years after XP stopped shipping on regular desktops and laptops. Apparently, upgrading these systems to Windows 7 may not be an option for most users.

In the meanwhile, the software giant insists that the only way for users to stay safe is to upgrade to a new operating system. The cutoff date is only a year from now, so time is already running out. It seems that Microsoft does not care that users of ancient XP PCs might choose to upgrade to something else, for instance Linux or even Chrome and Android. As for me, I might take it as a sign to buy myself new Macbook and switch to MacOS X.

With so many XP boxes out there, the experts predict that many users will simply ignore Microsoft’s warnings. The company’s decision to ditch XP could also lead to more opportunities for peddlers of alternative low cost systems based on free OS.

kings_of_pirates avatarI totally agree with taker upgrading to win8 is not only cheap but you really get better user experience with gr8 graphics. I my self into IT for past 8 Yrs and I can see Windows has done really good job with all those windows upgrade except vista. Waiting for Win9

No avatarHoly crap stop with the Win 8 shit. If you had more than 2 brain cells you'd know it isnt JUST about upgrading Windows. It's also about databases that MIGHT not be able to work with a newer windows which ALSO mean spending thousands on other new software AND the cost of switching over. Not to mention the downtime. Also, COMMERCIAL use of Windows 8 is a bit more than $10-#15....

YoGi avatarLoL yeah one of me machines has been rather laggy off late

But yeah, i'm just gonna buy a Windows 8 original copy. Linux is ok, but i'm not gonna waste my time re-downloading and looking for all the compatible versions of softwares that I have.

I'm not interested in having more than 1 OS on my system, so my new OS is gonna be Windows 8 for sure!

nobs68 avatari`m with you Taker on this one. I strongly recommend upgrading XP is outdated and for me
Windows 8 is superb, handles everything I throw at it. Its faster, smoother and has same
interface as Windows 7 but better, much better. Can`t understand all the knockers.
Works superb for me. The home networking is flawless and the play to xbox is a smart addition.

Embolism avatarxp dual booted with fedora works for me since i only use windows for the odd bit of gaming and I can use free space on the partition should I require it.I see no viable reason to Upgrade to windows 8 since I have a free O/S which is perfectly usable and has 100,000`s of free apps available through sourceforge and repositories which are every bit as good if not better than Microsoft.I use the same computer I built 10 years ago and if it aint broke I do not intend to fix it.As has been established by Android and Linux distros they are every bit as competent as windows so why upgrade because Microsoft says so,as people found out upgrading to win7 they also in a lot of cases had to replace sound cards and other hardware as well as 64 bit issues with BSOD due to usb issues and others.Updating in my opinion is like changing your cellphone to stay ahead of the Jones`s.

fusseltier avatarnobody with any sense, nor a real patriotic american would use any apple product.
apple is too anti american other than for profits for shareholders.

Crassis avatarUnless you build a hackintosh buying an Apple o/s computer is completely cost ineffective(i.e. waste of money), you get overcharged for the hardware components because its an "Apple". If you want to use apple's o/s build your own computer for 1/3 the cost and install the software yourself. Since apple's o/s only supports certain components just google hackintosh to see which components are supported. Otherwise use ubuntu or shell out the cash for windows 7 or 8. XP has been around for almost 12 years. What software company supports their product for that long? Whatever you do stop moaning about XP's no longer going to supported, it had its day now its time to move on. If your still running Vista dump it like a load of hot tomali's, and make sure you flush afterwards.

TheCuz avatarOk on my PC I just switched over to Win 7 Pro and love it ...It's prety much like my XP Pro Media Center Edition except it truely is way way better now for Win 8 that mainly was in my opinion made for your touch screen stuff and will work on a PC as well of corse but take 7 for your PC and you will for sure dig it lol ... 8 for your touch screen devices is good but not so cool for your PC or laptop unless your PC has a touch screen ready monitor screen or laptop screen and no offence to any Mac user's but You can't be serious as everytime ya fart Mac wants a arm and a leg as they call there own prices when ever they want on what ever they want computer wise...Decent Mac Home Unit what around $2,700 U.S. ... Know how many high end you could build yourself (that would even out preform the $2,700 Mac)for that price let alone regular units and everything on the net will naturally work with it unlike a Mac lol...So Mac is good but not so compatable with all things and totally over priced as are there parts when the warrenty is over....This is just my opinion for what ever its worth and the best thing is I guess if ya like it buy it and dont care what anyone says cause after all its gonna be yours not theres and your gonna be the only one thats gotta like it ;o) and #19 fusseltier I think I kind of now a days tend to agree with your comment a wee bit.

MadVillain avatarI think most people would rather just stay what there comfortable with. Sh** I'm still using vista home premium not that I have anything against win7/8, I just got used to it overtime, and it has never given me any probs,so bottomline don't fix whats not broken, stick with what you like, not what everbody else has.

cyberjoex avatarWindows 8 boots very fast! I love it! I also loved Ubuntu before but that OS is for none-gamers. Most good games run on Windows.

Jedimastersky avatarI Loved XP and it was the most stable OS I ever used, and I have used all windows OS from 98. I think it is a shame Microsoft are turning their backs on XP as I know so many offices in the UK still use it. Microsoft have not done their rep any good in this respect as most offices will now look for alternative OS that is cost effective.
I now run Win 7 on my old Pentium 4 PC but had some troubles finding drivers for my AVG graphics card. I guess a new PC is now inevitable for me, but I will not use Win 8 as I understand this is for touch screen tablets.
As for gaming, I only play World of Warcraft on this PC with Win 7 and it copes very well with this and my few game DVD's. But will have to upgrade the PC soon to play KOTOR online as they only support duel processors + and better graphics. Guess I got to bite the bullet at some time.

brods73 avatarbut you would have to spend money on a new pc, if your specs are shit windows 8 wont work and there are loads of people around using old pc's that would not be able to use win 8..il keep my windows 7 and linux mix il leave windows 8

giraffe avatarSam I agree XP was the best windows but we all have to upgrade away from windows one day.

@taker are you getting a cut from MS? WIN 8 sucks, compatibility issues, people complaining that they have to relearn windows and there are much better OS's out there.

@fusseltier get off the drugs, they are rotting your brain!

No avatarMicrosoft Windows XP has four special editions in the whole world that lets you keep updating even if it's out of date, only four users have this edition. The users will not be told. But I can say to users if you are not one of the four users that have it then upgrade to windows 8 or upgrade to windows 7 for another four years then upgrade to windows 8.

At least 1.5 gigabytes (GB) of available space on the hard disk
Windows 8 Minimum

No avatarI only have 512MB of ram and integrated graphics, so I use XP for games and certain programs like FormatFactory. The rest of the time I use Puppy Linux and it can boot from a flash drive so I can use it even if my hard drive crashes and it boots really fast. It's user friendly and does fine on my Dell with a 2.&GHz P4 processor. So screw microsuck and the whole UEFI bullcrap- I'm sticking with Linux.

No avatarXP is without doubt the best OS Microsoft has come up with. My new Ultrabook came with 7. I upgraded it to 8 for free and reverted after 30 mins! I dont like 7 much, but I have Classic Shell installed to give me back my XP look and feel. Why cant they update the OS and leave the GUI alone?
