It recently became known that Hon Hai, parent company of electronics manufacturer Foxconn, has finally signed a deal with Microsoft. The latter will let it legally manufacture devices with Android and Chrome OS patents, with the money going to Microsoft for each device.
It turned out that the software giant owns patents that are critical to both Android and Chrome. The full details of the deal have not been announced, but it is clear that Hon Hai will have to pay royalties for each Android and Chrome based electronic device it manufactures. The journalists noticed a tweet from Horacio Gutierrez, corporate veep for IP at Microsoft. The latter boasted that almost all Android manufacturers had to sign with Microsoft, the list including such famous companies as HTC, LG, and the main Apple rival – Samsung.
The person responsible at Hon Hai for looking after intellectual property at the manufacturing powerhouse claimed that they recognize and respect the importance of all attempts seeking to protect intellectual property. In other words, the deal in question represents all those international efforts. Besides, the deal in question signifies Hon Hai's continued support of international trade agreements, and not any legal wrangling from the software giant. Hon Hai tried to emphasize that it holds plenty of its own patents as well.
The industry observers have long speculated that with the proliferation of Android almost everywhere, as part of Google’s blanket attempt to smother Apple out of the competition, the real winner may appear to be the third party – Microsoft. Indeed, despite the fact that the smartphones produced by Microsoft are not exactly flying off the shelves, each Android device sold is an earner for the company.
