Microsoft May Backtrack on Its Touch Obsession

The suspicions of the industry observers are that Microsoft might have realized that the reason users don’t want to move to Windows 8 is because of its inconvenient interface. When the software giant introduced Windows 8, it for some reason believed that in the middle of a recession, the users would splash out on an expensive touch screen. Therefore, in order to make sure they adopted this, Microsoft got rid of the classic start screen and forced people to search through mobile tiles. However, it now seems that the company didn’t acknowledge that people may simply say “no” to the new OS. As a result, Windows 8 is not selling well at all.

The industry experts say that Windows Blue, also referred to as Windows 8.1, may backtrack on some of those stupid Microsoft novices. The rumors are that the upcoming update may bring the Start button back to the Windows desktop and provide people with the ability to bypass the Start screen entirely at boot.

Microsoft is currently still unsure about introducing the changes, but at least it is considering this option – this is a good sign anyway. If Microsoft kills both the Start button and disables the boot-to-desktop option by default in the next major Windows update, it will make absolute sense. The experts point out that businesses afraid of retraining costs or user backlash tend to purchase Windows 8 with a Windows 7 interface. There are more barriers to sale – for example, the fact that most people believe they need a touch screen to use Windows 8. In the meanwhile, Windows Blue is expected to come out later in 2013. Industry observers say that a public preview should arrive in or around June.

No avatarMy Brother is downgrading to win 7 because of this. It seems silly until you try to use the machine. The stupid smart screen pops up constantly and for no apparent reason, and when you want it you can't get it to pop up. Microsoft SHOULD have been smart enough not to totally abandon the keyboard and mouse when they are still on 99.9% of all windows machines. MS used to have you take an IQ test before you were hired, not anymore I guess.

skulljockey avatarI just bought a new computer a couple weeks ago and it came with windows 8. I did my tinkering as I imagine everyone would to make your new comp default to what you want to see e.g. my video player (vlc) my homepage etc. OMG what a mess I ended up with. That smart? screen is a pain in the rear. I totally agree with lol66 any time you get anywhere near the right of the screen that sucker pops up and doesn't go away until you click on another part of screen. Sounds simple enough but after 10-15 times it gets irritating. They should call this clunker Vista part 2. have a lot of experience with laptops, not a programmer or technician but a user even before windows came out. I do know away around a comp and can trouble shoot fairly well. But with Win 8 I can't find the friggen control panel half the time. Finally had to reboot back to factory settings. I called MS online help and I swear the dude I talked to knew less about Win 8 than I did. Feel like I screwed and didn't even get a kiss.

No avatarControl panel is the same way it has always been
Start type control panel

Please if you have a complaint about the OS,
Please don't complain about the ease of getting to control panel

Especially if you are complaining about the menu bar to the right of the screen
It also allows you to get to control panel
Mean Bar -> Settings -> Control Panel

No avatarThe start menu doesn't work that great for touch screens. Do you want to have to press like 3-4 times to navigate through start menu to find your app?
What Microsoft SHOULD have done, is default to the touch interface for computers with touch-enabled screens, and legacy desktop for old keyboard and mouse people.

And lastly for SaM, THERE ARE ABSOLUTELY NO SOURCES QUOTED OR ATTRIBUTED IN THIS ARTICLE. You basically have a poor quality blog posting (Blog postings usually link to references and sources). When you write without sources, you're essentially making shit up or giving an opinion.

ZerlindaX avatar@reargunner, You fail to read between the lines.
We all know that mobile touch screen devices
are the only way to go. Not many people are
able to afford or buy a new $800.00 Windows 8
touch screen computer. I don't no anyone who
have a touch screen monitor. We are still in
middle of a recession. Plus the interface looks
like more like a mobile OS. Mobile Desktop? LOL

jrv avatarThey f....k up big time with windows 8 its suppose to be easy and quick how cant it be easy and quick as you can`t find controls, And there is no start menu and there is no menu on the left side anymore. its slower because you can`t find these things anymore. Can make these things myself but thats not the wat to buy a computer os when you need to fix it yourself. It needs to be on the os itself now other people are making money on it because they are making a start buton for win 8 etc. And now Microsoft win 8 is a failure because of that. they thinking al the people gonna buy touch screen pc`s and that wrong every country has money problems. Meanwile the prices of every thing when up like a rocket.
Crysis every where you look. Even we in the Netherlands are feeling it big time.

No avatarWith touch screen the difference can be between $100 to $300. Acer T232HL which has touch is retail price $499, on ebay I saw it cheaper.

Just get over it guys, touch is here

Max_x2 avatarAny of you geniuses complaining about the control panel, tought about puting a control panel icon on your desktop once you found it? Lulz. Plus it takes about 2 weeks to get confortable with win8 UI. Cmon guys, you need to embrace change, and adapt. I've used it for the last 6 months on my desktop computer, switching from seven, and never really looked back. The task manager alone is almost worth the upgrade lol.

No avatarThe problem is MS was/is stupid for allowing this discussion. The first time in 20 years they have a product that Mac can't touch. A product that hits at Macs core, ease of use and they are blowing it! MS could have done a commercial where the fat guy in the suit cleaned the geeky mac kids clock, that would have been awesome! This problem is too irritating and prevalent not to have come out in testing, which means they chose to ignore it. They chose to ignore 99.9% of their install base. How is that not stupid? What would it have taken, a couple hundred lines of code? For once MS would have had an updated users wanted! As much as I hate Mac and like windows I have to admit MS screwed the pooch big time, and for no good reason!

ZerlindaX avatar@reargunner, The problem isn't with the touch
screen technology. The problem here is that MS
Win 8 came so fast that the millions of keyboard
and mouse users had no time to prepare or upgrade
for a big $$$ change. Let alone a Window's OS
looking like a moblie phone OS, lol. Just bad
marketing and a poor OS design on MS part.

mrlanza81 avatarI really don't understand what the big deal is. I have been using Windows 8 for about 4 months now(no touch screen by the way) and I love it! I have it on a newer system with an Intel i7 and 8g of ram. It runs flawlessly and boots up in seconds. My second machine an Intel Centrino and 4g of ram. Doesn't boot as fast on that one for obvious reasons, yet still faster than any previous version of Windows. The only hiccups I've had are when using a program that wasn't designed for 8. Nothing major though. If you take your time and figure out the where everything is, its a breeze. When I got my new machine I had plans to downgrade to XP. After about a week with 8, I installed it on my older machine. It is an awesome OS if you take time to know it. Yes there is a desktop, No you don't need a touch screen to use it,Yes the start button is gone, but you take time to learn how to navigate the system and soon you don't care. I honestly think most of those who say they don't like it probably just tried it in a store for ten minutes and decided they didn't like it. It is the best OS Microsoft has come with since XP and I think it surpasses it. Microsoft's biggest mistake is leading with the start screen or apps menu.

No avatarI had a HPT300 got rid of it, got sick and tired of having to wipe the screen ten+ times a day. Gone back to normal screen wont be buying win8 even though they offered it for $15.00 with my new desktop, so they can push for win8 all they want but it wont be happening for me. People have a right to choice and microsoft did not allow for that. Sick and tired every time I need help from them I get the page to update to win8 all the time, so just dont bother going to microsoft sites anymore. They wonder why they are loosing customers what a joke.

Darkan9el avatarI'm a Hackintosher mainly but have Windows 8 in vmware and I really don't see the problem, Just use a few modder apps and you practaically have windows 7 back but faster, with better features.

1. Classicshell.net for the start menu.
2. Ribbon Disabler if you'd rather have the old windows menus.
3. SkipMetro Suite
4. WinXMenu Editor Release
5. Start Screen Animations Tweaker
6. WinRManager.
7. Signin BackgroundColor
and finally...
8. BootuiTuner

I've had loads of customers moaning about Windows 8, Its just to radical for them, the general population needs ickle steps to allow their ickle minds to absorb the ickle changes. I love apathetic lazy people, I get to teach them all about their OS and the best part is, they never listen so I get to do it over and over and over and get paid for doing it.

I had one customer who bought an excellent touchscreen desktop with win8 I got to set it up and loved it, it was great fun, Then they decided they didn't like the touchscreen so they bought a desktop and an ordinary non-touch screen... with win8 installed "what the... eh! why did you do that?" "She wanted to use a mouse", "seriously!!!!! Ok I ged it where are the camera's" but no they meant it. 3 days later, "can you install win7", "well I can make win8 look and feel like win7" ok do that, 4 days later, "Can you install a real win7" "yes" The reason for this was...

She couldn't find how to forward emails from her web based virgin email account, I tried to explain it wasn't an issue with win8 it was a pobcam error (Problem Occurred Between Chair And Mouse)I explained how to forward emails, I even wrote it down but he smiled and said just do it, so, after installing win7 and taking it back, I get a phone call literally 30mins later, "It still has the same problem" Oh... My... God... I go back and she's in Outlook searching for an email {They don't use Outlook} You see kids this is what drugs do to you.. anyway I spend an hour showing her how to use virgin web based email and we have a eureka moment and the penny drops... The next words out of her mouth almost got her killed... "that was easy can you install win8 back on"

Her husband looked at me and gave me that look, the look that says "you can leave but I have to stay here live with her" Poor man.

mixahman avatarThat is why Macintosh is available. Many people complain that they can't comprehend win pcs, can't troubleshoot, fix or even run simple task that they need... so I tell'em to get a Mac. Simple as that, macs are for simpletons with there easy-to-use interface... even a baby can use. Windows has always been too advance for the masses, but Mac went the correct way in making a product that even the lowest forms of life can use. All you need is one finger, just what the company is giving you & I'm sure it's not the thumbs up.

And don't forget you still need a credit card to download the free apps!

Flamur avatarThere is a huge difference between supporting a feature and redesigning the whole interface around it. Touch is getting everywhere, no doubt, but I don't call going from Win7 to Win8 an UPGRADE! No way. Win8 feel more of a change than an update/upgrade and I know a really big majority of windows user do not want a touch interface as a default. This is simply stupid. The worst part is not offering the choice of the interface. They have a ton of options and very deep options no one has ever used. Not offering the desktop experience is just lame and stupid.

Also Apple is a profit oriented company. 30$ for an adapter to go from THEIR old accessories to the new models also using THEIR proprietary thingies... come on!
