Netflix’s Chief Content Officer claimed that legitimate alternatives for film enthusiasts are the best way to fight against digital piracy. Ted Sarandos, the man who’s been the head of the company’s content acquisition department for 13 years, explained that people really want a great experience and access – apparently, people are mostly honest. Thus, the best way to fight online piracy isn’t legislatively or criminally but by offering good options.
The matter is that ISPs are forced to publicize their connection speeds, and when Netflix launches in a territory the BitTorrent traffic drops. Nevertheless, everyone already knows that not all of BitTorrent’s activity is about piracy – for example, Netflix’s growth in traffic is not a sign of people stopping from downloading their favorite video content. However, at least a healthy percent switched to legitimate services over unauthorized ones.
BitTorrent Inc. points out that the key thing is that BitTorrent is an Internet protocol, just like HTTP, but it is able to move information better than any other one. Indeed, BitTorrent is an award winning technology that is currently used by Facebook, Twitter, Wikipedia, Blizzard, and even by some genetic researchers and the scientists working on the Large Hadron Collider. Basically, any company moving large data sets uses BitTorrent protocol.
Although people are free to download and upload any content via P2P networks, it becomes more and more obvious that Netflix makes a really valid point: if you offer people what they want and when they want it, then everyone will be satisfied, including copyright owners.
The clear example is the HBO-produced popular TV series “Game of Thrones”. For the last two years, the show had broken records on BitTorrent’s networks, but not because users wanted illegal content, but due to the different timelines of availability or the lack of it. This situation may change, because requests from thousands of people made the pearl of all premium cable services decide to launch a movie streaming service without the strings of having cable subscription.
It has been repeatedly said that if copyright owners, content creators, and all anti-piracy activists would understand that, everything would become easier and the fruitless war against online piracy would finally come to an end.

Nah, I'd still download for free rather than paying for it.
Did they ever think that people DL because certain items aren't available until a later date? Let's say 6 months from the time they are released in theaters. I know I don't like to wait that long for a good copy so I use bit torrent instead. Also it keeps the people happy cause they have something to watch that they are interested in. You can still go to the movie but that's spending more money and sometimes end up with more problems! Anyway I hope p2p lives on!

netflix wants to increase its sale.
The best way to fight online piracy is for content creators to stop creating content. Eventually, we'll all run out of old things to download. There you go, problem solved.
Just anthor way to control us
I totally agree!!
I had that Now tv recently for a free month and there was not one single movie worth watching on it!! Sky movies was still showing turner and hooch, WTF?
Netflix is all right, not brilliant but definetly pretty good. Aparently the US version is better but I dont know, nothing compares to the torrent sites not just for the latest movies but also for the naff Bmovies.
apparently, people are mostly honest.
really ,according to who??
NETFLIX can't control

I had Netflix for like a year and then dropped it because it takes me 5 minutes to dl whatever movie I want.. as opposed to waiting a couple days for it to come in the mail. And don't even get me started on their SHIT browse instantly selection. Save yourself $10 month and the waiting time. And lets not forget that whatever I download I get to keep.. FOREVER
The best way to fight piracy is to stop charging people people a lot of money for channels that are 99.9999% pure $hite. Want £1 for every episode of Game of Thrones I watch? I can live with that. Just charge a pound per ep and two pound per film and I would simply stop bothering to download as long as I can pay to watch it the instant it comes out.
This way I could save money because I wouldn't need such an expensive internet connection.
''However, at least a healthy percent switched to legitimate services over unauthorized ones'' I would like to see the evidence. Netflix expects us to believe that their intercession is changing attitudes to downloading. They are totally deluded. Why would people give up what is free and instantaneous and opt for pay and wait? Morality, yeah right.
why would i paid if i can get it for free ...life is expensive...
Just think for how long, and expensive it has been to go to the cinema and for years they ripped us off for music cd,s and films and games with inflated prices welcome to payback greedy twats free sounds good to me,and you know be honest they will never stop it.

There is no way that the lawyer's stopping the fight against piracy no matter how good alternatives there is comming. They dont want to give up there golden cow, there is a lot of Money for them to get there greddy fingers on.

25 yrs ago I had 6 channels for free and could always find SOMETHING to watch. Now I pay $95/month for 300 channels and can't find a damn thing. Goto the movies? $20 to get in, $30 for popcorn and 2 cokes (BULLSHIT) not to mention the $6 in gas it took me to get there and they wonder why Piracy is sooo prevalent.

I don't understand why you want to pay money to netflix? they support the anti-piracy lot anyway so why would you want to help ?
The way i see it is that netflix just want more people to pay them money, but they still monitor the content you watch?,

I download torrents every day but I still use Netflix. $9 dollars a month how much of a tight ass can you be? Its seems that if these movies were 25cents most would still bitch about the price. Yes they charge too for Blu-ray's ect but they got to make something they can not do it for free. If Blu-ray's were like $5 I would buy them all.
yeah everything is expensive

just educated the users ...like apple did making their own community....but please let we decided what is the best for us itself ....whether it's free or pay ....back to the square one #freedom of choose #opensource is the best thing ever #we're only human beings who wants it for free and that's the beauty of torrents ...
Netflix streams in SD (standard Definition) only, no matter what they claim!
Being a HD (High Definition) freak myself, it's a waste of my time & money.
I would much prefer to download HD movies &/or broadcast TV series by p2p,
& let someone else fight piracy by watching SD programing, on Netflix.

netflix my ass....
Best way to fight online piracy?
Make new content available cheap.
That is all.
I tell you what movie industry, let Netflix, release the movies in theaters the SAME night online as well as in theaters than the bootlegging will stop. Keep the price at $5.oo a month. If you can't afford that, go kill yourself. SMH.
posted by (2013-05-20 15:55:14)
it will happen eventually, its the only way in the end. netflix need to release films within a week of theater release.
posted by (2013-05-21 00:16:23)
Well, I can't agree that bootlegging(Piracy)would stop if Netflix was allowed to release movies the same night they came out in theater. However, I do think that tv shows should be on netflix the same time they air on tv. Oh, too bad the movies didn't come on netflix the same time they came out in theaters...I'd have a great copy as soon as it came out by recording it off of netflix.
if they would make decent movies and music with real musicians, and bring up the quality of their products, then more people would buy their products. but the way it is now, the movies are lame, and the music is atrocious... and both are always remakes after 20 years.
most people don't notice or even know, that the movies and music they have now were really released years before, and there is a cycle of re-releasing of about 20 years.
this means, nobody is really making their own music or movies, they are just making the same thing over again...
mainly because they have no talent, can't play instruments, or write a script themselves... just copy, clone, sample, etc.
so why would anyone want to spend their money on the garbage they are peddling? its better to download it and see how bad it is first than to waste money on something you wouldn't want once you tried it.
in other-words, they are just ripping people off by selling inferior products to unsuspecting consumers.
