Game Developers Decided to Play Pirates

Greenheart Games is an independent game developing company. It is known worldwide for its series of the popular video game Dev Tycoon. Recently, Greenheart Games thought it would be funny to upload on BitTorrent a tweaked version of the new game, masked as a “cracked” torrent – the game was specifically designed for people who infringe copyright. Let’s see the result of the experiment.

whoops-pirated.jpg

It needs to be said that the “cracked” version of the game is almost the same as the original one, except for one thing. Originally, the developers wanted to tell the gamers that their copy was an illegal copy. However, they didn’t want to pass up the unique opportunity of holding a mirror in front of the players and showing them what illegal downloading can do to the game creators. So, as the gamers spent a few hours playing and growing their own game dev company, they started to see the text in form of an ordinary in-game message, saying something like “boss, it looks like many people playing the new game by stealing it rather than buying it legally”. The comment continued, saying that if gamers stop buying the games, the developers would sooner or later go bankrupt. However, the message went on saying that the developers are not angry with the infringers, admitting that earlier, downloading unauthorized copies was normal as global game distribution was in its infancy. They also understand that today there are still people who have no opportunity to make a legitimate purchase due to payment-issues or who genuinely can’t afford the game.

This is quite a clever move, and perhaps some of the infringers reconsidered their way of acquiring content, but the situation started a heated debate about the legal and ethical concerns of piracy. For example, the main question was whether people downloading the “cracked” version of the game can be considered pirates. On the one side, the answer is yes, but, from a legal point of view, things are not so easy. A pirate is someone who obtained the targeted content without permission from the owner, but in this particular situation people downloaded GG’s tweaked game with the company’s permission, as it was the company itself who uploaded the file to BitTorrent. This case is a perfect example of why legal arguments can be so confounding – apparently, a single fact can be spun in two directions 180 degrees opposite one another.

1shadowwolf avatarSony has already confirmed that they would never block used games. They stated this 1 week after the PS4 reveal via facebook. Microsoft on the other hand probably will

Windfall avatarI don't think anyone would argue that the people making the games need to make a profit or there is no reason they would continue to do it, which, naturally, is bad for all of us. The flip-side is the investment gaming can become and the risk that you may not end up liking the game and, thus, wasted that already ridiculous amount of money. While I don't want to blast the game itself, this happened to me when I bought Final Fantasy 14 (or 13, whichever the second MMO was...you can see how much I played it). Yet, I did buy Torchlight 2 because I loved the first one and it was only like 20 dollars. Sooner or later the industry will either find new ways to provide us with affordable gaming options....or the indie game developers will beat them to it and that would be even better.

Darkan9el avatarCool concept, so instead of trying to take your home, inheritance, job and life saving from you in a totally non proportional way, they prick that tiny little thing called conscience; that's psychological warfare god-damn... very devious.

I stopped playing games, because I spent more time bug fixing them than playing them. My fav game for PS2 was Kula World, I still have the game on my shelf in the office but I don't have a PS to play it on. I'd play that if they bought it back in HD on a Wii HD or PS4, my fav franchise game was Ghost Recon and the awesome tagline "If you see us you're already dead" I think that's right

No avatarI do believe in supporting game developers and movie producers. Otherwise we will not continue to get quality products. One can't pirate everything. I buy games and I go to the movie. I make sure to show my support.

G3mbl0r avatarQuality products?! The most BIG new gametitles are released with 3 months work still to be done. Get a new game and you atleast need 10 updates for bugfixes, before you can play stable.

Quality BUGs for a HUGE price, Quality products... what a joke

If i buy a new car, i hope that my engine wont fall out, coz its new....

No avatarIf game devs and producers decided to charge me a fair price, i might give them my money. But when they insist on charging me TWICE as much as american's, i feel no guilt in NOT giving them my money. A $50 game in the US costs 90-100 in Australia.

Right this second, 50 USD is worth 51 AUD. But i have to pay 90 bucks in a store? or often 70 (at LEAST) for a download. The same download, with the same download costs as the US version but it costs me almost twice as much? If they waned 60 bucks i might consider it but they want almost twice as much just because i'm not American.

Pass.. If we can come to a fair and reasonable agreement.. but until then, you get what you deserve..

ivorbigun avatar@ Neopopulas, whilst not defending the over pricing in non US countries, you may find that your own govt's tax policies may have something to do with it, as it does here in the UK, although some of these US companies use that as an excuse and inflate prices even more. Hardware companies such as Razer do exactly the same.

No avatarAnyone who downloaded this game didn't infringe on any copyright. The copyright holder can do whatever they want with their copyrighted material including giving it away for free which is what Greenheart Games did when they decided to upload the cracked game to a file (sharing) network. I would say thanks for the free game but i have no interest in this garbage even when it's free.

debbiejuvenile avatarI used to be an XBOX gamer and have wasted hundreds and hundreds of pounds on poorly lazily developed games....since losing my job I can't afford to do it anymore so I switched to PC gaming and haven't looked back since...I think there should be a rating system on new games to judge their quality and price....eg... Far Cry 3....9/10= £40 The Walking Dead Survival Instinct....1/10=£5

No avatari like to try before i buy !! why waste money on games that get minimal plays, i only want to buy quality games, if i download a game and it is up to standards i will want to buy it and if its rubbish then i aint wasting my money, also i do hate them online games that you can only play with an internet connection, and then they have the cheek to try to make you upgrade using real money for extras such as a special power or weapons and so on, also online only games are double bad because once you have played it you cant sell it on as a used game because it is stored online not on a cd/dvd/cartridge. online only games are in fact more like renting a game till you get bored of it lol. how much money does it cost to play just one game on a console ?? 1st the console £200+ then a game £40+ then an internet connection for multi player lets say £10 a month so a rough estimate is £250+ just to play a single game!!! i could go on holiday or paintball shooting or rally driving for that much money

eNdEmiOn avatarThe problem is that people aren't getting payed for actual work done. No they do the work and then ask to get payed again and again and again and again and again.... for reproductions.

That's like a plumber getting payed after fixing your toilet and then get payed again every time you flush.
