The rumors are that global data harvesting operation Facebook has been in talks to purchase an Israeli mobile satellite navigation start-up Waze for $1 billion.
Press reports revealed that due diligence is already underway, as a term sheet had been signed some time ago. This means that initial talks started late in 2012. Industry experts admit that the giant could want to implement Waze’s functionality. The latter uses satellite signals from smartphones and turns them into real-time data which could help generate maps or build intelligence on traffic. Then this data becomes accessible to other users. Actually, the two companies started a partnership last October to let users of Waze interact with Facebook friends.
Despite the fact that information is a bit thin on the ground, the deal between Facebook and Waze seems a more measured than, say, the impromptu acquisition of Instagram, believed to be masterminded on a top-down level from Mark Zuckerberg himself. Since Facebook’s IPO, shareholders hoped the company would thoroughly consider its purchases before spending top dollar.
The global data harvesting operation has heaps of valuable information, but still fails to monetize as much as it could at this point. This is why it would be very interesting to see what Facebook is going to do with Waze if the deal really goes through. It is known that userbase of the Israeli start-up has shot up in recent years. That country produces a lot of tech savvy start-ups, and Facebook is known for previous acquisition of other companies from Israel, in the Snaptu and Face.com buy-outs.
