In the United Kingdom, a committee of the House of Commons has summoned the corporation executive to give testimony again. In the meanwhile, the authorities raised the possibility that Google might find itself in contempt of Parliament. It recently became known that the Public Accounts Committee was investigating why the companies aren’t paying enough tax.
According to the chair of the committee, Labour MP Margaret Hodge, she received documents from whistle blowers that demonstrated evidence the search engine transacted business in the United Kingdom. In response, Google insists that no money changes hand in the United Kingdom. At the same time, under parliamentary procedures, an individual prevaricating or giving false evidence can be considered to be in contempt of the House.
The search giant maintains it pays tax in full – the company’s head of sales in northern Europe, Matt Brittin, maintains that the £3 billion in revenues is routed through Dublin, in the Republic of Ireland. However, Brittin was told that the committee would continue investigating until it solves the matter.
