After years of being on the second place after a Mexican millionaire, William Gates is now back to being the richest person on the Earth again. Within the last 6 years, Bill Gates was number two to Carlos Slim, playing telecom monopoly in Mexico and gaining Park Lane and Mayfair.

bill-gates-3-390x285.jpg

But 2012 turned out to be a bad year for Slim. He hasn’t gone to jail, but still he failed to collect $2 billion in revenues, because Mexico’s Congress has passed a monopoly-busting telecom bill. The latter threatened Slim’s company America Movil’s supreme rule of the market. This is why press reports announced that after a recent stock surge, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates became the richest person on the Earth again. At the moment, his fortune equals to $72.1 billion, which is $550 million more than the Slim’s.

In other words, Bill Gates’ wealth has increased 10% this year after Microsoft’s shares have risen. By the way, this is despite Bill and his wife Melinda giving over $28 billion to charity. Actually, the couple is going to eventually give away 95% of their fortune, which is quite generous.
However, the industry experts may seem at a loss to explain how Bill Gates and Microsoft could be doing so well – the matter is that the papers only talk about very poor sales for Windows 8 and the stories emerge how the company had failed to monetize the mobile and tablet market. However, Bill Gates claimed that he expects the new operating system to build momentum over time. Taking into account that iPad owners may be frustrated by the lack of a keyboard and Microsoft Office functionality, Gates may appear right. Finally, the recent reports revealed another unexpected source of revenue for Microsoft – from its competitors. Since Android uses some of Microsoft’s patents, the company now receives $8 for every Android phone made.

trialNerror avatarThe one thing I admire about Bill and Melinda is their kids will not inherit any fortune of theirs. I believe they stated once they pass on everything goes to schools and other organizations. More millionaire families should take notes from the Gates'.

As for Windows doing so well - have you seen their new tablet commercials featuring Windows 8? The old ones that looked like a scene from Glee or something showed nothing. The new adverts that do side-by-side comparison with iPad are informative and actually make me want to go try one.

hubsabubs avatarI could care less how much the man is worth, having all the money in the world can't buy you not being an ass. The dude is a douchebag, his companies products are mediocre if that and their support and stability and security suck even more. The man's company is going to be invading the homes of millions this year with an always on, always watching, always listening, always uploading machine that provides individual ad based suggestions, and promising an experience that you won't find anywhere else. Yet there's SmartTVs that are already on the market that do the same thing their machine does short of playing games. The man is smoke and mirrors. At least Donald Trump has some class, and actually worked to build his company and not steal, rob and plunder other peoples hard work to make it to where they are. Oh and at least Trump takes care of his own, not being so greedy to leave their own children and grandchildren in the dark....

Honest, I only got it that way because I couldn't afford another overpriced and soon to be obsolete retail purchase! After all, my family & I have at minimum 3 or 4 PC's (Never an Apple or "i" product)and I had previously paid for several multiple versions of Win95 (and it's upgrade), WinXP, Win Plus for XP, Win98 (and it's upgrade), Win Vista, several copies of WORD and Office for XP (2007).

"The one thing I admire about Bill and Melinda is their kids will not inherit any fortune of theirs"

I hope people realize this donating their fortune to charity or foundation is only a means of avoiding having to paying inheritance tax or taxes in general.. that why if you look almost every rich American is doing this ( form movies stars to major CEOs . there are two method of avoiding taxes: via charity and/or foundations
personal foundations: you place all or most of your wealth in a your foundations, such as houses cars, airplanes property etc..., the foundation pays for their upkeep and for you to use. and any money you transfere into the foundation is now tax free. the foundation pays you a wage and all your wants and desires basically living tax free

transfere of wealth to charity upon death:
when you die your wealth is held in trust by the charity in a type of mutual fund after 8 years of being in the charity the money is returned with a small if any interest. depending if this money produced any significant financial gain for the charity or foundation during that time period .. the money is returned tax free to the remaining family members..

we have similar sort of thing here too. if you have property or wealth you can usually transfere it to the church upon doing so you no longer pay taxes on it. the only difference upon death the church keeps it and it not transfered back.

also the gate foundation is really money grubbing foundation, Ie the search for the cure for aids ( or any thing for that matter) even though it suppose to be A charity. any finding or cures are strictly belong to the gates ( not the foundation) and they hold any and all patent on them. and will be sold to the public at that point. say as compare to a university ( in most countries) any discoveries in a university is in the public domain and free for any one to use patent free

Naxan avatar@sash99 Seems interesting and likely the case. I know there are lots of loopholes that can by used like this. However, I hesitate to attack tax deductions based on charitable giving because it is a good way for people to make the money they have earned go to good use, even if only to a cause they personally believe in. The government wastes more money than they use for anything productive (see IRS scandal), so I don't blame people for wanting some control over their money to go to a "Useful" cause instead of the tax coffers.

On a separate note, how much money can you have before there is nothing left to buy? Bill Gates gave 26 billion to charity, So what? There is nothing left for him to possibly do with the money. Giving charitably seems more meaningful when you don't have billions of dollars to fall back on...

hubsabubs avatar#10 @ Naxan, do you know how many houses 26 billion could of bought and then been provided to for in need families in America, how many meals it could of provided for starving children. Investing this amount of money into charities that really in no way effect anything in a grand scheme, is moot especially those that are intentionally used to avoid taxes and work the system. Bill Gates can remain the most wealthy man in the world, but that doesn't buy him respect or honor. The man could do so much more, and be remembered for so much more than a Blue Screen of Death and a Red Ring of Death and some other garbage Microsoft decided to pump out. They made the movie Anti-Trust for a reason, I can't wait for all these poor souls to run out and line his pockets buying this hoax of a system that's going watch you, listen to you and monitor you in your own home 24 hours a day 365 days a year. The man is conglomerate scum.

No avatar@ Naxan
I have no problem people giving to charity, but why broadcast and make yourself seem altruistic.
if he has to much money what the problem paying his taxes, as that taxes goes a long way to help people in his own country alot. building your road, and infrastructure, and paying for universal medicare , and all the social programs that a country might have. the rich sure have a real aversion to paying their taxes don't they.

it not any different then the wandering evangelist or televangelist ( only on a grander scale) we have in north America and else where, it not about preaching the word of god or "saving souls" it about money and how much you cam milk for society..

kschomisch avatarI love the people that criticize gates for his motives and methods but fail to tell us how much they gave to charity or what they are doing to make their world a better place!
The couple have put 28 BILLION to use to help the planet and humanity.....28 BILLION !!! .....and how much have they done this with? I'm thinking ZERO is probably the number we're looking for! LOL
Hubsabubs criticizes the products Microsoft makes--completely missing the point , others let him know how he should be doing things differently with his fortune. Make your own fortune and do as you please. He MIGHT be a pretty smart guy, maybe have a little business savvy and surely would value a broke-MFer's advice on how to manage his affairs--LOLOL. Jealous much? What is it you do that can compare to how he is giving back , even if it still does benefit him and his family??

hubsabubs avatar@ # 20 kschomisch, www.murphyswarriors.com is a charity that me and my 2 brothers have started and are trying to get going. I myself receive donated computer systems I repair and fix and donate to kids who need computers at home to use for education and other things. I work closely with Andrew Young III and his Give Locally charity in Atlanta, GA. I have done a lot of computer work for them when they donate computers to local youth centers and educational institutions. I do home/handyman/building services for those who can't afford them as well. Volunteer for habitat for humanity. I collect and donate regularly to Goodwill, who then uses those funds to educate people and prepare them for the workforce, providing shelter and funds for meals. I volunteer regularly for the meals on wheels for the elderly who can't always afford and prepare their own meals. I also help out at a horseback riding ranch program for children with special needs, I have helped at the Special Olympics here in Atlanta. So I do believe I have some room to speak when it comes to these kinds of things.

hubsabubs avatarI criticize the products Microsoft makes because majority of their products are high priced garbage that they produce to bilk people out of hard earned money. In turn to give them crappy technical support, support for their products and basically leaving people with vulnerable open to attack systems. I see it as lets take your money and run and not give you anything else in return. Everyone knows Windows is a highly vulnerable and very unreliable system. They are already in talks at Microsoft to stop working on touch technology projects and products and to stop working on Windows 8. They have slated Windows 9 for release in November of 2014 already, with no plans of releasing anymore updates to Windows 8 and offering no more support for the product.
