The on-the-ball lawmakers of the US state seem to have accidently banned all PCs from Florida in one of the poorest cases of knee-jerk reaction seen in American politics.
It all started after one of its local leading politicians, Florida Lieutenant Governor Jennifer Carroll, became involved in an online gambling scandal. It turned out that a charity which she was connected with was closed down on suspicion of being an online gambling front. Although Carroll resigned, her colleagues still wanted to make sure that nobody could gamble online ever again.
Thus, they drafted a law which meant to close down all Internet cafes in Florida (the idea was that if you go to an Internet cafe, you can gamble online). Nevertheless, the wording of the law did more than just shut down Internet cafes – it turned out so broad that it actually banned the use of all PCs and smartphones in the state.
Indeed, the bill signed into law by Florida governor back in April 2013 got about 1,000 cafes immediately closed in a Chinese-style crackdown. The main problem was that the bill defined a gambling slot machine as “any machine or device or system or network of devices” which could be used in games of chance. As such, taken into account that almost every computer can play poker, all computers can be considered illegal. At the moment, Consuelo Zapata, an owner of the Miami-Dade county Internet cafe Incredible Investments, is suing Florida and demanding to overturn the ban, because the definition in question is too broad and could be applied to any number of electronic devices.
It seems that the state will win the “most stupid IT law” award of the year. The other challengers are Arizona, which updated its telecommunications harassment bill to target cyberbullies while making it against the law to troll someone on a message board, and New York, which tried to ban anonymous Internet comments.
Industry experts point out that in case the legislation is allowed to stand, it would mean that every PC, smartphone, smart TV, and games console may be required to be shipped out of Florida just in case they could be used for gambling. As such, it would turn the state into a place that could be quite popular with the Amish but few others. Well, at least they won’t be gambling anymore.

Well, this got to be the stupidest thing I ever heard, I hope they get sued for years to come, Floridians don't let this sh!t fly, fire all the responsible parties, I think the government needs to be stopped NOW!this is a prime example of thinking with their A$$. Fire them all.
Why are all our elected officials wandering around aimlessly with their heads stuck up their asses?? AND While most other states are loosening their "Medical Marijuana" stranglehold over thousands of people who could benefit, Florida just banned bongs & other glassware. WTF?? I live in Florida and this is the worst "Police State I've ever had the misfortune to reside in. Please note: I've resided in NY, Arizona, California, Illinois, Wisconsin and visited 23 others. I do have adult children in Hawaii & Washington State. Warm or cold? I'll pick the warm one... :o)
Capt that law basically bans all smoking devices other than rolling papers and is a 3rd degree felony at officers discretion. So now we have officers that have even more power to make legal decisions

Alright, everyone calm down. This actually happens all the time when idiots write legislation. Some aspect of the bill is so broadly defined that it is rendered meaningless or it encapsulates things that weren't originally intended. Normally, opponents of the legislation jump on these blunders immediately and they get corrected prior to passage, only this time they jammed it through so fast that it was missed. They'll either amend the law or overturn it in court. Your precious torrent boxes are safe from the MAN.
But, if what was said, that over 1000 internet cafes have been forced to shut down because of the law, there will be some serious lawsuits against the government for having caused serious harm to legitimate businesses. And of course, you Floridians will be on the hook to pay out all the monetary awards to these cafes through your tax dollars. Have fun, and, remember to vote in the coming elections
Seems like the nicer the weather the dumber the politicians. Must attract all the riff-raff. I read somewhere that Florida has been under martial law since 2001.

I live in Florida. I wouldn't live anywhere else . . . beach, weather, babes, restaurants, no income taxes, Miami has it all. But it is surprisingly backwards, compared to California. Drug enforcement is harsh, no medical pot in a state where tons of seniors would benefit (not to mention the fact that in a state without income taxes, it would be an obvious and easy revenue source), really idiotic politicians, and like the feds, much more willing to pass stupid laws like this one rather than deal with the tough problems like balancing the budget, getting rid of perks for politicians and their buddies, and actually make tough decisions, not easy yet stupid ones.
i want to know how this would work. i mean every phone that is out now is a smart phone. without the computer the entire state of florida will go under. computers do everything. so stores will no longer be able to accept debit or credit cards. that would also ban some vehicles also wouldnt it? and i dont see it sticking because the entire intake system is run by computers so i want to know how this is going to work. i guess my trip to Pensacola is canceled.
so does this mean Disney, Pixar, the launch site for the shuttles amongst many other major businesses are going to be forced to shut down? It's odd this comes after a cease halt on further filming in Florida, Miami Vice, Burn Notice and other shows are no longer allowed to film there. So therefore no more seasons !
