There were two Italian hackers found working in Malta earning money by selling secret vulnerabilities in computer code. Luigi Auriemma, 32, and Donato Ferrante, 28, have been selling information on such vulnerabilities to the countries which might want to hack into the computer systems of foreign adversaries.
According to media reports, the main buyers were the NSA and the Revolutionary Guards of Iran, but the Italian hackers haven’t confirmed that these are their customers. It seems that if someone is able to find zero day vulnerability in software, they prefer not to tell the software company, but rather contact their local spook and sell the secret to it.
Before, Luigi Auriemma and Donato Ferrante were selling secret coding flaws to software developers, including Microsoft and Apple to let them fix vulnerabilities, but since then the software companies have been priced off the market by the spooks. In response, Microsoft sharply increased the price it was ready to pay for technical details of such flaws, offering up to $150,000, but that appeared not enough for hackers.
The Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington suggested that Israel, India, the UK, Russia, and Brazil were major customers of the Italian couple. The outfit pointed out that North Korea was also in the market, as were a number of Middle Eastern intelligence services and countries from the Asian Pacific, including Malaysia and Singapore.
It turned out that the spooks can be accessed via online brokers, the most famous one residing in Bangkok. He goes by "the Grugq" on Twitter and it is known that his business suffered after he went public back in 2012.
