Without stopping spying on its own citizens in order to help out the United States, Germany still has given its backing to controversial data protection reforms in the EU.
The hand of German Chancellor Angela Merkel was more or less forced following the revelations of American surveillance whistleblower Snowden. She claimed that online companies have to tell Europeans where their data is going and, apparently, provide them with a choice in case they share information with American spying outfit NSA.
Merkel pointed out that unified data rules are necessary across the European Union. The EC has recently proposed new data privacy rules that would see organizations fined 2% of their annual turnover for any breach of the legislation and entrench the “right to be forgotten” in law. Of course, the plan in question was objected to by the United States, which in this case would lose control of European data bases. At the same time, the United Kingdom will also do what it can to help the US, while American online giants like Facebook and Amazon are afraid that they’ll be asked to ensure the deletion of their members’ data.
Angela Merkel claimed that her country will take the strict position, saying that in case the United States government wants to spy on German citizens, they will have to stick to German law. Apparently, this is one of the good things that Snowden’s incident resulted in – according to Viviane Reding, the commissioner who has been spearheading European information protection reform, the PRISM revelation was the one that has given her cause a boost.
