Lots of hit movies will fill the DVD shelves at the stores this week. Among them there are the pretend blockbuster “Where The Wild Things Are”, the real blockbuster “2012” and a bigger haul for Hayao Miyazaki’s fans because Japanese animator has got four films pack release, this including his latest work – Ponyo.
Let’s check all them out!
Where The Wild Things Are
Actually, if you tend to listen to most film writers and critics, they all say this movie was a monumental achievement and complete success. But there’s an ugly tiny secret about this film, which hipster moviegoers and critics don’t want known. The film was a bomb. Not a mega-bomb on the Poseidon’s par, but still a bomb – in terms of being the money-loosing audience displeaser if we believe the numbers.
Let’s see. Its cost to be made was $100 million not including marketing. The movie only made $93 million worldwide. If you can score at home, the studio also spent $30 million for marketing the film. That gives us $37 million net loss at a conservative estimate.
But if you listened to most of the online press, this movie was described as a massive hit. Nobody denies, it did have a good opening as it made $32 million on the first weekend, but that was almost one-third of its entire gross around the world. It’s not hard to guess that this complete falling off a cliff right after its first week only indicated that it was detested by all the audiences. So, to watch or not to watch – that is the question.
Tell the truth – you did like this movie! Don’t conceal it. It might’ve been crap, but it’s been gorgeous crap, gloriously entertaining one. May be even more entertaining than many of the other “good” films you saw last year.
Well, just imagine it’s been half a year from now and you are getting home from, say, a local pub and it’s 3 am. You don’t want to sleep yet, and you decide to dial up channel 500 from DirecTV and so you start to scroll through the movie channels and here you find two options, one on top of each other. The first one is “Up In the Air” with all the introspection and firing, the second is “2012”, which is in the midst of the action. Which one will you select? If you don’t need anything more than just mindless entertainment in the evening, what will you choose? Seems like we both know the answer.
Hayao Miyazaki DVDs
The last DVD release for today – films that don’t need to be described, just seen. Along with the release of Ponyo – the latest film by Hayao Miyazaki – on DVD, Disney released three other classics from animation master on 2-disc special edition. They are the colorful “Castle in the Sky”, “Kiki’s Delivery Service” and “My Neighbor Totoro”. The originals contain extras like trailers, original storyboards and documentaries on the making of each film. That’s really the best choice for family evening as these films are adored by both children and adults.

2012?! The people who made that movie should be punched in the face.
i do agree with most about 2012 as being a pants film but it did try to tackle a monumental subject IE end of the world but how can you make a movie like this without it being crap think about it all disaster movies have to be crap cause disaster has to be stopped by a hero as soon as that happpens crap film
so here is the 10 million dollar question how do you make a good end of the world disaster movie which fits with as i understand it HOLLOWOODS guide lines on making films IE good must overcome evil that sort of thing
don't know, 2012 was marginally better than the unwatchable day after tomorrow, one of only 2 movies that i ve ever actually walked out of because i was bored out of my mind.

I'll give a vote for Where The Wild Things Are. It was different than
I expected and it threw me around and that's a reason I liked it. It
might have been an art-house film if not for the director being Spike

I like 2012... for a disaster movie, they did a great job... Armageddon was most likely the only decent disaster movie to this point and that movie achieved because it focused on its actors story instead of the main plot... this movie 2012 had the special effects that didnt actually look fake like in most and also had characters you can connect with... Woody Harrison was great and the just how they connected it to real life greed (the rich Russian buying his way for his asshole kids... you just know thats how its really gonna end...
