Apparently, American lawmakers aren’t interested in curbing the PRISM spy program. Press reports revealed that the House of Representatives voted 217-205 to defeat an amendment to the defense appropriations bill. The latter was supposed to limit the NSA’s ability to harvest electronic data, including telephone call records.
Fighting the legislation was an unlikely alliance of libertarian Republicans and some Democrats in Congress. In result, 94 Republicans favored the amendment and 134 didn’t, while 111 Democrats supported it and 83 opposed. However, the White House and senior intelligence officials were against the amendment by Republican Representative Justin Amash of Michigan, prompted by Snowden’s leak.
The lawmakers approved $600 billion in Pentagon spending for the next year – this figure also includes the costs of the Afghanistan war. Meanwhile, Republican representative Tom Cotton explained that there was nothing to worry about because the “metadata” was being harvested as a five-column spreadsheet with the numbers communicating, date, time and duration of call.
Cotton assured that the program has prevented dozens of terrorist attacks and saved unspecified number of American lives. He didn’t say when these events happened, which is quite weird, because so far no one has actually ever cited any case with terrorists being pre-empted by PRISM. In addition, Cotton is a former Army captain known to have been served in Iraq and Afghanistan, which means that he won’t support anything that limits defense spending.
Justin Amash of Michigan, a conservative Republican, along with other supporters of the amendment, explained that the question was whether the American government had the right to gather and retain the personal communications information of US citizens. According to Ted Poe, a Texas Republican, the authorities have gone too far in the name of security. Poe was calling for a number of things, including a reining in of government invasion, the ending of dragnet operations, and the need to get a special warrant based on probable cause or nothing at all. Hopefully, Edward Snowden’s revelations and current troubles won’t be for nothing.

Who's Eric? BTW i would like to add when the rich do it, it is business. When the poor fight back, it is violence.
Yes, even some of the war veterans of today are seeking political office, they are the exact same as those politicians that we all need to get rid of. Our privacy and liberties are worth more than preventing an attack. As an American who is unemployed and having their benefits that are so desperately needed to survive reduced with Sequestration, and no help being given to Those like me for the coming year, we sure could Use some of that pre-$600 BILLION to help Us live. But I guess by using it instead to deprive Me of more of my Liberties and Freedoms they are seeing progress in their plans to eventually set the stage for what they are seeking to get, which is the total subjugation of the poor and elevation of the Rich beyond any repair or recourse.

His name is EDWARD Snowden.
The thing about this liar's statement is that we know they're liars. They kept this from the public and said it wasn't going on. They did so to keep us from knowing that we're the enemy, and are being spied on. In any just court this would mean that all testimony by the NSA/Pentagon and it's cronies is suspect, and should be disregarded as false. We should assume that they are still lying. Look up ARGUS drones. They are forming web diagrams basically, of everyone you know and who they know, etc. This means that if they decide to go after Jews, protesters, or even Congressmen etc. that they know everyone you talk to and where you might hide. The only reason for this is that they plan to start rounding people up like in Germany at some point in the future.
They've already listed returning veterans as a higher threat than Al Qaeda, and called Ron Paul supporters and protesters, "low-level terror threats". They've already said Snowden was a Ron Paul supporter. They've already said he is a threat to the security of the nation('s tyrants). It's only a matter of time before the borders close, and anyone who supports freedom and opposes tyranny is hunted by swarms of HELLADS drones.
They want the good guys in the military to look at this and resign, or stand up and be political prisoners. That way they'll purge the military and all that will be left is the scum that will confiscate guns, violate the people's god-given rights, and tell themselves it's a good thing, that makes us safe from the boogey-man.

"representative Tom Cotton explained that there was nothing to worry about because the “metadata” was being harvested as a five-column spreadsheet" - Does he really know what info can be gathered behind scene while the '5-column' report is prepared?
Do you even know that the 5-column spreadsheet data is like having a private investigator up your azz 24/7? They know everything about you through this "metadata". They know who you call, why, when, and where. They know what groups you're part of, what ideology, religion, and politics you believe in, protests you participate in...all from "metadata".
They don't have to listen to your actual conversation to know you're in a group and target you.
its a farce all this prism crap .

People really believe it's only the US that does this? All governments spy on their citizens. I'm not condoning any of it, but I love the smug comdemnation that comes off of the non-US citizens, as if your records are safe...
