FreedomWeb, an Ireland-based company providing hosting for “hidden services” over the Tor network, was recently closed down after its owner, Eric Eoin Marques, was alleged of helping spread kids abuse images.

Apparently, the Federal Bureau of Investigation has managed to hack Tor. According to its Open Watch blog, users of Tor hidden services suddenly discovered that their copies of the browser were infected with malicious Javascript which de-anonymized them.

The experts suggest that the FBI has hacked them. The matter is that Tor Browser is originally shipped with Javascript disabled, but it seems to have been somehow switched back on again to make the browser more useful. Despite the fact that this move can be regarded as a victory for the FBI against kids pornographers using the Tor network, it also represents a serious security breach for international activists and online users living in repressive states which use the services with the only purpose to practice free speech on the Internet.

In its efforts to take down kids abuse images, the authorities might have exposed countless activists to arrest and torture. But the experts suggest that as far as the untouchables are concerned, those activists are foreigners and very far away. The affected service, OpenWatch, has been in the early stages of designing an alternative to Freedom Hosting, named OnionCloud, in order to allow anonymous Heroku-like app hosting.

No avatartor was always hackable, all you need is to set yourself up as an end node.. which FBI and other countries have being done for years to monitor traffic through tor nodes

No avatarSo the headline says FBI "MANAGED" to hack Tor, but in the article it clearly says "The experts suggest that the FBI has hacked them". Suggests is not fact or proof. Suggests isn't even equal to "suspects". Jesus Christ SaM, get it together. Stop whatever ulterior motives you have and just report FACTS, not BULLSH!T.

brods73 avatarthere has been an update for this breach..Tor officials said they have not decided whether to take action against whoever created the exploit, which targets earlier versions of Tor's browser bundle. "We need to see who wrote the exploit and deployed it. We'll reserve next steps until some future date when more facts are elucidated," Tor Project Executive Director Andrew Lewman said in an email.

ZerlindaX avatar@antman39, you miss the whole point. Many people
around the world use VPN for everyday normal and
legal privacy use. Some countries cut your hands
off just by going to a porn site, lol

rebornawareness avatarWow. talk about Dirty Tricks. Arresting him for nothing. If helping to spread child abuse photos means he is a tor node/hub or whatever, meaning other people can access websites through his connection then it wouldn't be him doing anything. Probably some FBI dude connecting through his node/hub passes a child porn photo to another FBI dude and they charge him with "HELPING" to spread the Photos cause it went through his connection. Or else why wouldn't they charge him directly of spreading the shit instead of "helping". If I'm correct in my guesses or understanding then It's total b.s. Also those last articles about silk road etc, is just mudslinging and advertising and promoting illegal stuff in order to slander tor. Most tor users probably never even heard of that stuff until the news stories told (advertised) the world about it.
