Police throughout the globe have been embarrassed to see online videos of their officers pepper spraying tied captives. In our age of mobile gadgets the pictures can be uploaded online in seconds, making supervisors to answer the questions.
But now the police may not need to fear scrutiny anymore, because Apple has recently patented a piece of technology that would allow the authorities and police to block data transmission, including video and photos, whenever they like. All they need to do is decide that a public gathering or venue is deemed “sensitive” and needs to be protected from externalities. In this case Apple will enable them to switch off all its gear. The developers insist that the affected locations are normally cinemas, theaters and concert grounds, but Apple admits it could also be used in covert police or government operations that may need complete “blackout” conditions.
In the meantime, privacy outfits point out that it could also be used to prevent such whistle blowers as Edward Snowden from shooting pictures and sharing them online. In response, Apple claimed that the wireless transmission of sensitive data to a remote source is a threat to security, with the sensitive data being anything from classified government data to answers to an exam administered in an academic setting.
Anyway, the fact is that Apple has patented the means to transmit an encoded signal to all wireless gadgets, commanding them to disable recording functions. The developers reveal that the policies would be activated by GPS, and Wi-Fi or mobile base-stations that would ring-fence around a building or a sensitive area in order to prevent mobile cameras from taking pictures or recording video.

does this only work with apple products as this could be useful if we could turn them off all the time and let other better technology come out into the open.

Oh look, another reason to despise and avoid apple products...they're just making it too easy now...whats the catch?

I wonder how many people who actually buy apple products will start asking the big question as to WHY they would want to remotely disable all recording functions of their internet capable devices. START ASKING YOURSELF THE COMMON SENSE QUESTIONS YOU DAMN SHEEP!!!! Nothing more disgusting and entertaining than to hear those blind wool-over-their-eyes fools say..."you just hate apple because they make better products"...NO..idiots..this wasn't a far stretch to predict from how Apple was behaving the past few years..they want to control certain technology and are thus willing to pass on that control to lets just say higher powers..watch it unfold right before your eyes.
Easy to overcome, put your phone in airplane mode before recording.

Dammit onemustang you stole my comment. I was typing the same thing. How right you are though. @j3zr33l even though I don't really like the iphone(I like my MacBook though); the apple hating is over the top. At least we know our android phones are safe know. Because Apple will sue them if they use that technology.

What the heck is going on with the world these days. Apple wants police to get away with murder like the police that shot Oscar Julius Grant III! Makes me love my S2 even more!

This is why we will not use iPhone's.
That just one more reason why I'm not a Apple Fan.
If I buy something, I like total control over it.
With Apple products, you're limited. I don't think
you can't even change a phone batteries, at lease
for people who know nothing about computers, lol.
i dont think airplane mode will work because im pretty sure they thought of that too. the fact that u are not allowed to fully power down these devices should have told u all something already.
Apple you just took one bite too many outta the apple FOOLS.
Surely the police would never stifle peoples freedom to express themselves by posting vids of officers tazing the elderly, pepper spraying their captives and shooting the unarmed - what`s the world coming to - i`m deeply shocked
I suspect the reason apple has done this is due to poor recent sales and Samsung kicking their ass in the market place with no sign apple will catch up anytime soon
By offering this feature it makes the phone VERY attractive to governments the world over for their staff as the ONLY make of phone they would be allowed to bring into work which could avoid the public discovering droves of illegal projects before they come to fruition
Yes it "might" have an impact on consumer sales but lets face it most of the people who would expect to find themselves in a position to see handcuffed unarmed protestors being kicked, tasered and pepper sprayed probably don't buy apply to begin with.
From the police perspective they would be better served just having cutout hardware put in place at all cell towers or the ability to request a cell tower is shut down remotely in any area theyre working with just their equipment being able to work
But to be honest I am sure that's already in place anyway as the US and UK governments already have the ability in an emergency to shut down the internet and mobile networks at the routing level and to take full control of TV,Radio, Cable and satellite channels
So being able to selectively shut down one or two towers specifically hardly seems like a stretch tbh
who cares the world is gonna end soon anyway (in relative terms).
another reason iphone suck ass
Now I ask why do u think fb and other social media is free via your telco. Remembrr last time they gave u something for free. Easy so they can spy on your ass. They know where u are ,who u talk to. And your political inclination.and now they can control your phone. I think we are becoming the Borg if we let them. F,them!!Samsung rules!!

@ubermik1976 ... You're missing the point. Even if they DO shut down the cell towers, there's nothing stopping anybody from recording the incident on their iPhone/iPad/iWhatever then uploading it at a later time or from a different location.
What THIS technology does is prevent the device from being ABLE to record AT ALL, therefore there's nothing TO upload.
now they are plainly advertising why not to buy their iphone. Smart move apple. Positive technology.
Again, I have to ask; What is the government so afraid of? Or do they just hate us this much? Most "terrorist attacks" have come from (or pinned on) foreigners, this obsessive need to spy and control the citizenry is pure paranoia and beyond illegal.
SolidRegardless dusts off his old VHS camcorder
I heard this was already done during 911 and thats why there isnt hundreds of home videos available, except for selected insiders who were pre picked to cover the event and whose camera equiptment was protected with faraday cage like shielding, which is the same thing you see on your microvave oven window. So could we make some kind of faraday shielding to prevent the evil elites cencorship of there evildoings?

They don't want anymore Rodney Kings.
The police need to be able to beat you senseless without retribution.
"In the meantime, privacy outfits..."
They are security outfits. The NSA doesn't say their secrets are a matter of national "privacy". They think that when it's their secrets, it's a matter of security, and when it's yours it's privacy. It's the other way around.
They are hiding illegal activity. Your data should be secure because otherwise you are vulnerable to manipulation, harassment, profiling etc.
Classified government data is a threat to your security. It lets them commit crimes while they access your data and know who's in your personal "circle" and what you do, believe, where you go, etc. That's like hanging a flashing sign on your front door that says "On Vacation for 2 Weeks, Please Take Whatever You Can" and then when the sheriff comes to search the robber's bag as he walks out the door he says "It's a matter of personal security" and the sheriff goes "Oh, ok. Thanks for keeping US safe Mr. Theif".

Look on the bright side. Now that Apple have bought this in they will sue anybody else that tries to put anything similar in their equipment - making your non-apple devices that much less liable to big brother control.
How come when they want to bring in things like national ID cards and stuff to keep tabs on everyone, if people complain about it they say "if you`ve got nothing to hide, whats the problem". Another case of `do as i say, not as i do`. The next time someone`s thinking of going on a shooting spree at a school or post office, why don`t you just take a stroll up to the NSA building or the CIA, do us all a favour. This is probably my last comment here, i think i might suddenly `disappear` soon, (in the name of National security, of course)

One very good reason to keep those small gadgety micro spy cameras (I have one, hehehe), mini-dv cameras, vhs cameras, and any concealable analog video camera handy to do the job; because they cannot be shut off via wireless.
Just stand in a hidden location where you can still get a view of the action and Record to your heart's content, then go home and convert that analog video to digital with the right hardware!
For everything else there's Android.
Think I'll start running fast sketch classes, they can't block a pencil.
|And That's why my Friends I ONLY BUY android and add custom roms to them . Never have i liked nor will i buy any overpriced apple Product .||
