According to the audience figures from comScore, Yahoo! attracted more website visitors in the US than Google during last month, which pushes the corporation to the top of the Internet league for the first time in the last 2 years. However, the statistics don’t include traffic from Tumblr (the blogging platform acquired by Yahoo) and mobile users which are actively visiting Google. Anyway, it seems that the changes made by new CEO Marissa Mayer started to resonate with users.
Approximately 197 million users visited Yahoo! in July, according to rankings from comScore, while Google only accounted for 192 million. In the meantime, the last time Yahoo! outperformed Google was back in 2011. Such improvements suggest that changes made by new Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer, who was recruited from Google, are starting to resonate with the Internet audience. The new CEO has revamped the Yahoo! home page and email and weather services.
Meanwhile, the Yahoo! audience total didn’t include traffic to its newly acquired blogging platform Tumblr, which came in as the 28th most popular website in the world, accounting for about 38 million visitors. Ed Barton, director of digital media at Strategy Analytics, admitted that no Internet media outlet would have come close to predicting this, and even if they had, people would have said they were insane. As for Yahoo!, such turn of events will most likely have a positive impact on its share price. In addition, if Yahoo! keeps this up, it may become relevant again.
It should be noted that comScore’s statistics only paint a partial picture, because it includes no mobile phone usage, though the latter accounts for a significant amount of Google traffic at the moment.
