$1.1 million was diddled from people by a family through an online dating scam – the victims believed they were helping lonely soldiers. Media reports confirm that Karen Vasseur, 63, and her daughter Tracy, 42, from Denver, have been recently jailed for 27 years for Internet scam.
The court hearing revealed how they would pretend to be soldiers looking for love. In result, they duped 374 victims in the United States and forty other countries. Colorado Attorney General John Suthers claimed that the family not only broke victims’ bank accounts – they “also broke hearts”.
Both women pleaded guilty when arrested back in 2012. Tracy faced 15 years in jail, while her mother was given a 12-year prison sentence. However, Tracy Vasseur received another 4 years for her attempts to gain control of her kids’ inheritance, and for “trying to influence a public servant”.
Although the women were not the only ones in the scam, thus far other participants of the affair haven’t been caught yet. The scam was simple, and the tactic was to target potentially vulnerable individuals on popular social media websites or dating services. Karen and Tracy would pretend that they were in the US military and in need of money.
If a victim offered their help, they were instructed by the women to transfer money to their own accounts who posed as “military agents”. People are kind, so there were a lot offers to help. For instance, one of the payments was for $59,000.
The court found out that most of the illegally received cash was spirited away to accomplices in Nigeria, but also to individuals residing in the United Kingdom, India, United Arab Emirates and Ecuador.
