Apparently, the National Security Agency has had to question hiring brilliant people ever again after the Snowden case. As you remember, whistleblower Edward Snowden managed to access some sensitive national security data by spoofing some of the outfit’s top spooks. According to NSA representatives, every day the agency is learning how brilliant Edward was and found more good reasons to only let dimmer people into its systems.

Apparently, brilliant people shouldn’t be hired for jobs like that, because they get the agency in trouble. Instead, smart people should be hired. When Edward Snowden was a Honolulu-based employee of Booz Allen Hamilton, he obtained system administrator privileges on the NSA’s intranet – NSAnet. It looks like the National Security Agency still has no idea exactly what Edward took, but it started a forensic investigation to demonstrate how deep he got into their networks.

Part of the problem is that the whistleblower impersonated high-level officials on the network so perfectly that it’s difficult to tell if it was them, or him who was reading the NSA’s most secret stuff. At the moment, they can do nothing but look for discrepancies between the real world actions of an NSA worker and the web activities linked to that person’s user profile.

The agency has already detected a few cases where Edward Snowden borrowed someone else’s user profile in order to access documents. Although Edward had “top secret” security clearance, he apparently needed higher levels of clearance. This was achieved by using his admin rights: he managed to create and modify user profiles for employees and contractors. In addition, he had access to NSAnet through those user profiles, which means that he was able to impersonate other users to obtain access to files. It is known that Snowden borrowed the identities of users with higher level security clearances in order to grab sensitive data.

Moreover, Snowden’s admin rights also allowed him download files from his PC to an external storage device. This is how he obtained 20,000 documents put onto thumb drives before leaving Hawaii for Hong Kong this past spring.

No avatarthynome: good suggestion. @Big_A_Little_A - have you been following this thing at all? Yeah, he didn't get caught, he came forward with the information publicly, knowing that as he did so his old life was effectively over and that he would either be a fugitive from his home country forever, or would be captured and at the very least, spend the rest of his life in prison.

Embolism avatarMr Snowden is hardly a genius,a genius would`ve leaked the information anonymously as a 3rd party and given he had access to others logins/passwords it might have been amusing to frame the director of the NSA for the leak and cut off the head of the snake at the same time, lol.

Embolism avatarWhilst kudos must go to whistle blowers like Bradley Manning,Mr Snowden,Bill Binney etc it must be said that the damage they have done to the reputation of the intelligence services could have been much greater if they did not leave the community but stayed and worked within it, since once they blew their cover they were of no further use.No doubt Mr Snowden either thought to be a modern day hero or whilst downloading information acquired some serious state secrets which would be lucrative enough to keep him in comfort during his exile or even to get him amnesty for their return we will wait and see ,awaiting further developments in the ongoing saga. : D

alfranatic avatarYes greymongel,big little a..

Indeed an Americain, very well paid, was so disgusted by his native USA,that he preferred to live in sweet exile.
You morons put over 1% of your fellow-americans in jails (often private),meanwhile over 180 terrorist are being kept in luxurious villa's all over the US...
(...ah..well..just don't believe it..)

Your national PUPPET,Osama Obama, will start a new war..so no worrys there,
keep poisining your own people with that "new" fracking horror.
BTW,there were allready doing it in the sixties, but the amount of realsed gas was uncontrolable..Guess what..it still is.

But Really Embolism, who are you to judge?
What you are expecting?Nothing, just projecting some romantic childish spy-fantasies..
You yourself couldn't do it for 1 day.

Genius..?? You think Einstein thought of himself as a genius??
Grow up,get real & if your IQ isn't well over 200..,please don't comment on such a subject..you genius..no you allmighty judge..

alfranatic avatarThat was a harsh comment.
Let me say, that for me , we all are human beings, all equal..no matter what.
In no way do i wan't to insult the majority of human beings, people,in the States..
Just ,the criminals who spy on us,people who glorify war /e.g. Syria/ _
and ofcourse, the invaders, the triffids and the blind -mentally- who judge so easy ans quickly..

frenzeed avatarI must admit i haven't followed the case/articles/gibberish but the bit where he had “top secret” clearance and yet still needed higher clearance to get a hold of certain secrets suggests what he has leaked doesn't even scratch the surface. Genius....He knew what to leak and how to leak it. When the authorities get a hold of him i would imagine that there will be more leaks of higher level data to help convict him.

No avatarHow can any of you be hating and judging Snowden? Take a look in the mirror. What have you done that's so special? How have you attempted to warn the American people and the World of the attempt of the NSA to spy on EVERYONE!? End of Freedom, end of privacy. For those of you that think he was caught, you are obviously clueless. You speak and try to sound intelligent on things you know not even the most basic of facts/ Please stop poisoning the world with your pseudo wisdom. As for not going through a third party, he deliberately chose to not do that. check out this article. It will enlighten you a bit. Please don't speak on things you obvioulsly have spent the absolute minimum time researching, as is evident with these ignorant comments. Get mad at me all you want, just try to not get defensive with my words and see the reason in them, so that you dont make an ass out of yourself in the future...

Embolism avatarActually [email protected] I am a member of MENSA although only having a 158 IQ unlike my sister who is a real wunder kinder with 7 degrees 3 A levels and 11 GCSE`s, if you actually read what was written and understood what Kudos meant you would realise I gave praise for the actions of whistleblowers and if you had any understanding of the history of the intelligence community you would not assume that there was not sleeper agents in various governments and embassies around the world who already work from the inside not to mention in the corporate sector in regard to industrial espionage. As you rag on the USA alone it might do to read up on your own countries history Kim Philby always springs to mind in the UK for example, but Mr Snowden unlike Tom Cruise has come out of the closet so unless he has worth to Russia or other countries as an asset with information germane to their own security then he is really out in the cold. : D

Embolism avatarEinstein never actually took an IQ test that I am aware of but he is estimated to have had one around 160-190 allowing for deviation and his actual brain weighed slightly above average.
The highest iq is around 230 I believe but it varies day to day and the holder of the record has been recorded as low as 160.

rippled avatarnot everyone is tested by MENSA so the results are redundant for the smartest in the world or genius...the results are only about those tested in areas that may or may not be pertinent to anothers lifestyle.

Embolism avatar@20 quite true there are many genius level personages out there and not all have academic qualifications or are MENSA tested and the entry level for MENSA does vary in the USA as opposed to the UK I believe it is 140 in the USA and 150 in the UK.Isaac Asimov was a member of Mensa but I do not believe he was ever tested and Einstein as we know was never tested and spent years as a patent clerk at the end of the day its the choices we make and the way in which we use it that defines intelligence. For example Einstein did not split the atom but after work done by Szilárd and fumi wrote to Roosevelt and suggested their discoveries be weaponised and atomic bombs be made (despite Einstein being a pacifist)this singular act made him known as the father of the A bomb.

Embolism avatare=mc² for which Einstein is most well known is merely the equation/description for what energy is expected to be released, Energy equals mass times the speed of light squared.
Einstein in hindsight(after Hiroshima) commented that: creative madness is called genius and destructive madness is insanity.

Embolism avatarIn conclusion regarding spies and genius I nominate John Cairncross the 5th member of the Cambridge 5 as being genius material since he was caught in 1951 as being in collusion with burgess and later after a sojourn working as an academic in the USA got back into the treasury and continued his work for the Russians,it was not until the 1990`s it was proven that he was the 5th member of the Cambridge 5 definitively by which time he had prevented the British from cracking Russian codes and passed numerous secrets off to the enemy, now that is genius.Burgess,McLean and Philby all bailed out and defected losing their worth immediately they had no further info to pass along to the Russians much as Mr Snowden will find out in exile, albeit a comfortable exile depending on the high level secrets acquired.
