It has just been discovered that the Energizer Duo USB battery charger, which runs from a USB cable attached to a computer is vulnerable to attack from hackers, ever since the product was originally launched in 2007.
To use the charger you first needed to download driver software from the Energiser website and install it onto your computer. Unfortunately this software was found to contain the Arucer.dll Trojan, which opens a back door to the computer by placing the file UsbCharger.dll in the application's directory and Arucer.dll in the Windows system32 directory. In a statement by the United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team (CERT) (A division of the U.S. Homeland Security), “the Arucer.dll file is a backdoor that can be used remotely for unauthorized access to the user's PC.”
This back door is accessed through port 7777 and can be activated at any time by the hacker. Allowing the hacker to log on and of the computer and remotely control it as they please. Once access has been gained to the computer they can gain entry to any of the computers systems and send/receive files and to implement programs of their own choice.
Energizers has terminated the sale of this product and withdrawn the downloadable software from its website.
They are now working closely with CERT, to find out how and why this product had become infected by a Trojan.
It has been recommended that if you have purchased this product and installed the driver, to uninstall it as soon as possible and to block port 7777 on the computer.

Great artical. I have and would never have thought to question driver software from any company that is public. Makes you wonder how many other back doors are installed by companies like this. One would also have to wonder what if the D.H.S would require companies like acer, dell, or what have you to install these backdoors. Who knows we all could have them, and it would be unknown.

I don't think that this thing is being sold in our country just yet... so it's a good heads up for us living in the third world if ever they are going to dump their junk here. Wish you could do also an article regarding CISCO's CRS-3 (Carrier Routing System). They say it'll revolutionalize the internet by increasing download speeds unheard of... It might be good news for us torrent users.
Thanks for a very interesting Article Sam.
ET is the place to be!
Can some one explain why you need to install software just to use the power buss in the usb port?
Was it because they were too cheap to just assemble a charger completely contained to show charge and full charge when done charging jeez.
Also to the other posters about tracking you;
If you’re using Laser printers for printing documents, then here is an important post for you. While printing pages, some Laser printers print tracking dots that are invisible but contains crucial data in it, and these dots can be used to track the Serial Number of the printer and the owner can be easily traced.
The US government has succeeded in persuading some color laser printer manufacturers to encode each page with identifying information. That means that without your knowledge or consent, an act you assume is private could become public. These tracking dots include :
* printer serial number of a laser printed sheet
You can read the whole list of printers which do or do not display Tracking Dots here.http://www.eff.org/pages/list-printers-which-do-or-do-not-display-tracking-dots
Now, every time you print a document, it will automatically include a secret code that will be used to find the printer owner.
Ever wondered how they catch those child porn pukes with only a picture? Now you know....
@ menahunie, nice addition to post, never knew that about printers,Thanks.
the software is for monitoring the status of the batteries charging on the computer monitor.
in a press statement released by energizer quoted
" The site offered down loadable software in both Windows and Apple® versions; however only the Windows version contained the vulnerability."
