According to the latest Snowden leak, for the last three years, the National Security Agency has been creating sophisticated graphs of the US citizens’ social connections.
Investigating the shedloads of information the agency has collected, NSA is now able to tell who your friends are, your locations at certain times, your travel companions and other personal data.
One of the slides from a leaked NSA presentation reveals the way it uses e-mail and phone information in order to analyze the relationships of foreign intelligence targets. Another file revealed that the NSA was told to carry out large-scale graph analysis on communications metadata “without having to check foreignness of every e-mail address, phone number or other identifier”.
The NSA was mix and matching communications information with public, commercial and other sources. The list included bank codes, insurance data, Facebook profiles, passenger manifests, voter registration rolls, GPS location data, and even property records and unspecified tax information.
It seems that the agency may also know more about foreign citizens than their own government does. The Americans may also have been caught up in the effort. Actually, lots of foreigners might know the US citizens and sometimes send them emails.

Thanks for the article Sam you time and effort is appreciated. I would be curious to know if has it been the worth the NSA taking our right to privacy and freedom of speech away. I mean have they thwarted any acts of terrorism aimed toward the U.S. or our allies. The U.S used to be the greatest country in the world. That was a long time ago. If you compare the U.S. to other countries in education, math reading writing etc. wealth, debt, healthcare, and a few other pertinent categories. The U.S. is no where near the top of any of the above. Many of the numbers are 35th 47th 29th etc. The U.S. leads by a landslide in one dubious category and that is in number of incarcerated citizen per capita.
I'm sure they have used it for legitimate reasons or they wouldn't have it in the first place. Government agencies don't sit around trying to think of clever ways to spy on people for no reason. This is the only way they can counter terrorism because their main source of recruiting and communication is through the internet. This leak was a huge breach in national security. Now, the NSA and other agencies will have to come up with new tactics, since these have been exposed.
OH ya, if you are paranoid about the NSA because of the leak, just think about this. The NSA is charged with gathering data internationally and not domestically. Same with the CIA. The FBI on the other hand solely exists to collect information domestically.

you don't actually believe all that do you? you know the united stated government destroyed Tor? Why is that? I guess there was a big terrorist plot... or maybe they just don't want you to communicate secretly. They claim it is a hub for child porn... the same lame excuse they use to arrest anyone for anything internet related. Tor is a hub for child porn like Google is a hub for child porn.
THE GOVERNMENT IS HERE TO DO WHAT WE SAY, THEY ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO MAKE UP THE RULES AS THEY GO ALONG, AND BECAUSE TERRORISM IS NOT ONLY FALSE, IT'S IRRELEVANT.
@1 has his finger on the pulse,@2 maybe not so much.
There is an adage that says knowledge is power and if such is true then the NSA have power more than a Nuclear reactor right now.
What will happen when the worlds leaders who have signed up with the NSA in its play for Global domination of Cyberspace realize its not just about profiling all the citizens of their country its about delving into their closets as well and controlling other countries through the power of information, controlling and misdirecting our intelligence in scenarios such as WMD`s in Iraq and Saddam Hussien allowing Al-Qaeda into Iraq and whopping great lies that are believed by other insecure nations who listen to their lies allowing them to do as they like in Global affairs, pedophile and terrorist threat B/S is a tactic that opens the door for them and corporate America and allows them to do as they wish when the EU legal system would`nt allow the TPP and ACTA and all the other bills that got turned down in Europe.
Now everyone bow down to your new American masters and say yes sir ,no sir.
@2 might consider that it was FBI warrants that instigated the arrest of Kim dotcom (not in the USA) and many, many overseas servers (some with warrants and some with just government support)like Demonoid.
It might also be worth considering that the NSA along with PRISM including 70+ Microsoft fusion centers has been collecting data on its citizens from around 2003 onwards and legally has been intercepting all overseas emails and communications from 2007.So the NSA is spying internally and externally, the FBI is working internationally and not just domestically and the CIA is basically the Department of Dirty tricks that covers up the leakage and handles the less scrupulous actions we very rarely see although inquiring minds can fathom, for instance the involvement of the CIA in Vietnam in 1964 whereby 40000 people were killed and the stage was set for the `Police action`,in Vietnam was instigated. To believe that any or all 3 branches of law enforcement and intelligence gatherers play solely in their own ball parks is and has been proven to be wrong and the initial plan for the Global Domination of Cyberspace was released in 2000-2001 as a white paper from the director of the CIA,in which it`s mandates were released and reiterated to some extent by Bush and later Obama.Along the way we have seen George Bush instigate trouble by threatening to wage war on Al-Qaeda hence 911 and that was after Al-Qaeda was created by America in Reagan's office when they were trained by the USA in N/Africa see state sponsored terrorism, then there was reports of WMD`s and the Englishman who made a report using 12 year old information as to Iraq`s weapons capabilities was found dead in unusual and suspicious circumstances, said report did agree with the American Intelligence saying there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq despite 700 inspections by Hans Blix in 12 years and his reports stating there were no WMD`s.The very fact that unsuspecting countries have created their own cyber alliance with America does not give them Carte Blanc to spy on our governments adhoc and with Ms Merkels recent phone surveillance it may well be that certain of their overseas partners will be rethinking the future of this spying sooner rather than later for all concerned say I.
