As you know, the American government regards Edward Snowden as a traitor who exposed its abysmal treatment of its own people, while in the EU Edward has been shortlisted for the Sakharov prize.
Indeed, it turned out that Edward Snowden, the fugitive US former intelligence worker, has made the shortlist of three for the top human rights award in Europe. Media reports revealed that he was nominated by Green politicians in the EU Parliament for leaking details of NSA surveillance.
In the meantime, it seems that Snowden wasn’t suffering as much for his deeds as other nominees did. The other two nominees are Malala Yousafzai from Pakistan, a teenager who was shot in the head for demanding education for girls, and a group of Belarusian political dissidents who were jailed three years ago for protesting against the disputed re-election of President Lukashenko. For Snowden, this looks like tough competition from people who really suffered for their stands for human rights.
The Sakharov prize was given earlier by the European Parliament to Nelson Mandela and Aung San Suu Kyi. The Parliament’s Green group claimed that Snowden’s nomination meant his whistleblowing was an “enormous service” to human rights and European citizens. The prize for freedom of thought is awarded annually in memory of Andrey Sakharov, a scientist and dissident from the USSR. The winner of this year prize will be announced in October.

|Along with the author I agree that although he has sacrificed his country for doing what he did, he did so in light of what already was public knowledge if people opened their eyes,Starting with the NSA/CIA whitepaper from the director of the CIA in 2001 clearly stating the intent of the NSA to along with its overseas partners take control of the Internet. This and its later objectives pre 911 and the patriot act and Bushes 2007 bill etc,Bill Binney left the NSA in 2001 and has told the world+dog since then what Snowden is taking credit for now in essence the MAN is watching you and your every move, whether you like it or want it is of no consequence to the NSA nor are any rights you may believe you are entitled too realize it and deal, whereas the others who gave their very life to help their fellow man laying down their life deserves at least posthumous Kudos in recognition of their sacrifice.|
|One could argue it is like giving the Nobel Peace Prize to Obama after he rescinded his carte blanc on water-boarding some 3 months after he gave the ok for interrogators to give water-boarding lessons to untried, unconvicted and unlawfully imprisoned suspects in GITMO detention. In a scenario where we are led to believe Mr Snowden is an altruistic philanthropist one must also consider he has taken more intelligence than just to let us know we are being watched 24/7 which is how he can pay his way and stay in other Countries,no doubt he may well have had a big financial exit strategy and having support from the public aids in such an endeavor whilst selling state secrets to finance the retirement package.(after all we are told he is intelligent).|

|i'm after reading this morning in the irish sun or the irish star newspaper that obama is spying on angela merkels privat mobile phone he is not getting away with that one|
one law comes to mind: one law for them and one law for us.If it`s ok for the NSA to spy on the Citizens why not on everyone in a country,Politicians that allow foreign nationals to spy on their people cannot expect to go crying about it when it is done to them such 2 faced diplomats should not be in power since it is against the basic rights of Privacy and breaching the security of any country that allows such a practice.Ms Merkel should know better since it is stated she grew up under the watchful gaze of the Stasi who are not as well funded and not as invasive as the NSA.
|Snowden should`ve logic bombed the NSA mainframe before he bailed out and done the world a big favor.||
