The software giant is going to automatically switch on Windows Defender for those people who don’t run any system protection on their old XP computers. Microsoft’s official website said that their goal has been focused on getting as many of its users off of the older Windows XP OS onto something more modern and protected – preferably, Windows 8.1.
At the same time, the company decided to discontinue support for Windows XP next April, which means that if users continue to run the operating system any holes will remain, unpatched, forever.
The idea is that as the users go into an unprotected state, the company requires antivirus vendors to be installed as the initial upgrade source. In case the license has expired, the first thing the operating system asks them to do is to upgrade. If the users have no anti-virus software, then the company will automatically install its Defender product. Microsoft said it wouldn’t nag, while telling people that they aren’t protected, and move them back into a protected mode without users really knowing.
At the moment, Windows XP makes up 22% of the worldwide user base, while in developing countries the figure may be close to 1/3 of computers. This means that there could be plenty of machines suddenly protected by Windows Defender very soon.

Quite happy to kill updates for XP and even happier to silently run defender on winXP so as to be able to monitor and scan those who still use it.It`s in your interest and for your safety have to be added onto the regular 3 biggest lies and right up there with your cheque is in the post and I will respect you in the morning.!!

NO FREAKING WAY!! Luv XP,,,Im not switching to crap win 8...!!!
Why don't they understand that not every computer will even Run win 7 or 8? And not everyone can upgrade their hardware either.
Force to? good luck with that, its called no auto upadtes, and have a good internet security program,i use bitdefender and Nod 32 myself.

While 2 of my systems are still XP, my main systems are Windows 7 (best move I did) and 1 is Windows 8 (Don't have a problem with it). I feel with XP stopping being supported, doing all the Updates (use to be called Patches / fixes as well) would be the best thing for users to do. That way as many Holes are closed. But have to say, going to Windows 7 (the new XP LOL) is a smart move
Going to Windows is NEVER a smart move. Open source GNU/Linux is the onnly smart move. Puppy Linux, Slitaz, Liberte, Tails, Fedora, Debian, Arch...PICK ONE. Anything open source instead of apple or microsoft is a smart move.

if people do not want to they should be forced to. As a previous user said some machines cannot upgrade because they do noy the specs too. use liinux is yet another alternative and it is free.

@Beamer_Smith: That's the point. If you haven't upgraded or can't, you need protection, and they'll be happy to turn it on for you. This is what proves they understand. You need to make this point to Apple, who doesn't support an OS from 4 years ago let alone 13 years. And Apple machines as a percentage cannot upgrade to latest OS as much as an XP machine could upgrade to 7.
This is a good thing, IMO. If its on the Internet, it will turn on some form of protection. If its not on the Internet, it won't, so it shouldn't mess up production machines that shouldn't be touched in a closed environment.
I like XP, I also got an older used vista dell laptop, and I was told not to update windows or instal windows defender, and don't used IE, I've come to the conclusion to believe this to be true, since I don't have problems,
I noticed before that with updates caused some software drivers not work, and slowed down my PC and took up space, I deleted all the updates possible and everything is fine, I have a feeling that these newer updates are more about collecting info more efficiently and causing you to buy eventually a new computer, only to start the whole process over again with your new PC !

Installing Linux the smart move?? Will it run Crysis ? Arma ? COD ?
When linux can run everything THEN its a smart move, until then its for ultra geeks who dont like gaming.
Clearly everyone is missing the point, MS don't wont to leave, Muppet's that haven't updated their computer or OS in the last 12 frigging years, unprotected, when they stop supporting an out of date OS. You can buy a computer that will happily run Win 7/8 for £300-£400. If you state you cannot afford to save up £400 over 12 years then you are well and truly a MUPPET or a lying pedantic C**T and deserve to have your XP system hacked by some Somali terrorist or who-f'king-ever. XP is like Swiss cheese, old, tasteless & full of holes
yeah xp is the most coolest...i have windows XPOWER EDITION and it eats just 200mb memory with all updates, drivers, etc, all the newgen games are running great....the ones who supports xp for the others i play them on laptop win7, when i have time

People come on get real listen to "YoMammaSoFat" I been using linux for years, even contributed to the source code, you cannot effectively use an o/s that constantly spies on you, or tries to force update on you. I must admit I have an old laptop with XP on, cut to the way I want it with a very very small footprint just the bare bones. Bill gate did not even code his first dos /os
The "Microsoft Disk Operating System" or MS-DOS was based on Microsoft's purchase of QDOS, the "Quick and Dirty Operating System" written by Tim Paterson of Seattle Computer Products, for their prototype Intel 8086 based computer. and they just uploaded everything on that, strange that every O/S from MS has a Dos basic .

There are dual core PC's on ebay and craigs list for $100 to $150 dollars that will run Win7. I have a old Dell d800 1.7ghz single core 1gb memory and win7 is way faster than xp every was on it. Hard to believe people still have pc's so old that still work and will not run win7.
I have a 500MHz laptop tat's 10+ years old and it boots in under one minute with linux and doesn't heat up half as much as it did with XP. I'm using SliTaz linux on it and it's a 40mb download. I have WINE, Pidgin, FreeCiv, VLC, Firefox, everything else I need on it. It responds super fast compared to XP, and it's open source.
Do you guys even know WHY Microsoft's OS has so many holes that you need "protection"? That's because the NSA bribed or infiltrated, or otherwise forced Microsoft and Apple etc. to build back doors in the OS. This is confirmed thanks to Snowden. This is why open source (GNU/Linux) is so important. It's harder for them to get these back doors in and easier to find/correct them with open source.
Now if you want a video game so bad that you'll expose yourself to spying and tyranny then you deserve what you'll get. If you have a brain, you'll just dive into linux and say "If a mo'fo wants to sell me a game he'd better port it to linux 'cause I paying Microspy to spy on my a$$ and undermine my security for the National Security Subversion Agency(NSSA)" then eventually more and more developers will do that, and more people will be comfortable with switching to Linux, and this will draw more developers etc. until Microspy and Apple look like Pong in comparison.
@11 I was playing gta, unreal, unreal tourney goty,UT2003 ,UT2004,and most FPS games since including open source games such as nexuiz since development, there are around 40,000 free games in development on sourceforge.net and games like ut2004 with inbuilt .sh as well as steam on Linux so linux has more than enough games and clones of games to keep a serious gamer amused and if still not enough for you just dual boot and use windoze to play games that do not have a .sh as of yet and benefit from both ,some of us already do.
p.s you do not need system updates for gaming if that is all you intend to use windows for,nor do you need any connections to Microsoft, nor do you need to lose what you already have just use fedora 19 or 20 and create a new partition ,load linux and at the boot choose whichever one you want to boot with (encrypt your HDD and password)simples.

|more that 70 percent of the world PC's still run XP.. so what, they all have to throw a their os's away because the assholes at Microsoft say so??!!!.. the additional costs to small business owners to transfer their data to win8 will drive them out of business. also, there are heaps of 3rd party updates avail to keep XP running.. so F U Microshaft!!||
