Google Continues Removing Piracy Links

Anti-piracy outfits BPI and RIAA have sent Google over 74 million takedown notices combined in 2013, FilesTube topping list of requests. The tech giant admitted that it had to remove more than 200 million pirate links from its listings this year – a four-fold increase over the previous period. It seems that at the current rate of removal of piracy links, the company will have been forced to delete more than 250 million by the end of the year.

The British and American recording industry outfits (BPI and RIAA) lead the charge for takedown requests, as their combined share is 74 million so far. FilesTube, a Polish file-hosting service, had the largest number of requests – more than 7.6m links were deleted from Google search results. Overall, the company was required to remove links from almost 300,000 domains by 30,000 rights owners.

Regardless of the record-breaking number of link removals, with the company taking down at least 8 infringing links per second, the MPAA still complaints that Google isn’t doing enough to prevent people from finding pirated material. The MPAA claims that it’s the fault of search engines that they introduce people to illegal content, because they do this to people who aren’t actively looking for it. Poor TV and movie community is working hard to find new and innovative ways to watch material online, and as an Internet’s gatekeeper, Google should share a responsibility to play a constructive role in not directing people to infringing content.

According to statistics, in the final week of September the number of removal requests sent to Google surpassed 5.3 million spanning over 37,000 domains from 5,400 rights holders, which marked a 4000% increase over the first notice listings by the tech giant two years ago.

majordik avatarThe thing is the "copyright" holders or claimed holders currently provide no proof they are in fact the legal "copyright" holder of the material they complain about and demand taken down.
Search engines need to grow a pair and tell them "Prove" you are the legal copyright holder and then it will be taken down.
Better yet these "copyright holders" should be required to say setup an account with the search engine and file this material in their account as well as providing legal proof they are the legitimate copyright holders. Then ay links that match that file proof they can themselves take down the link. This would now put the blame directly on their own heads..
Former Mega upload had a similar system in place.

dovahkin avatarAgreed with you number one.
Speaking about hosting Copyright material, How many of movies currently on youtube nowadays?
If google said they were compelling to do that, it also has to remove all of youtube link and blocked it's own site IMHO

Embolism avatarthey should all put up or shut up,if they can prove it then take it down if not then it can be seen as another way for the NSA and corporate America to control content to the point that we have to watch their content solely and be fed their lies and half truths.there will come a time when torrent sites will have to set up on ships like radio Caroline in international waters outside the reach of Governmental and Corporate BS since the Global domination of what we see and do has already reached Orwellian status.
