Australian intelligence has been suspected of copying the paranoid United States by spying on its ally Indonesia. It turned out that the local spooks at the Australian Signals Directorate were tapping calls by Indonesia’s President, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. The information was made public from the documents leaked by defense contractor Edward Snowden.
Another Snowden leak revealed that they listened in for two weeks in August 2009 and also tracked calls made and received by the President’s wife, Kristiani Herawati. There were also records of calls of Indonesia’s Vice President, Foreign Affairs spokesman, Security Minister and its Information Minister.
In response, the country’s Prime Minister Tony Abbott was trying to play down the spying allegations by claiming that Australia had a very close, cooperative and constructive relationship with its nearest and most important neighbor. Other Australian politicians supported Abbott, saying that it was just “chest thumping” by Indonesia’s politicians trying to further their positions in the lead up to the country’s elections.
Nevertheless, Greens leader Christine Milne claimed that spying on the allies has never been the way someone should treat their best friends.

|You forgot to mention England, Korea (North AND South), Israel, Iran, Syria, and any number of OTHER countries.|
Everybody recently has been focusing on national intelligence gathering (Spying), yet I'm surprised that NOBODY so far has even MENTIONED the GREATEST INTELLIGENCE NETWORK on the planet ... THE CATHOLIC CHURCH. It's reach far exceeds the NSA or CIA, and it's not constrained by national laws, since it has a presence in almost all nations on earth (Middle East excepted). Think about it ... people VOLUNTARILY provide many of their deepest secrets in the confessional box.

|Trust the greens to jump on any band wagon without thinking! They no nothing about diplomacy, of course Indonesia has to jump up and down everybody expects it. It will all blow over as soon as there is something else to write in the papers. Indonesia has too much to loose if they are really is as hurt as the media and polies make out. The only countries that don't spy are the ones that don't know how or get it from someone else.|
