US Government Will Have to Disclose Details on Internet “Kill Switch”

A federal court has recently ordered the US government to reveal details of Homeland Security’s Internet “kill switch”. The Department insisted that protocols, known as Standard Operating Procedure 303, have to be kept secret in order to protect national interests and the safety of individuals. Nevertheless, the US District Court for the District of Columbia couldn’t agree and ordered to make the details public.
surveillance-cameras.jpg

It all started when the Electronic Privacy Information Centre (EPIC) claimed it wanted to know the protocols that govern shutting down Wi-Fi networks in order to prevent the remote detonation of bombs. As you can understand, normally civil liberty groups do not like the very idea of switching off any networks. When the outfit first asked the Department for details, the latter replied that it couldn’t find any records on the “kill switch”. After the Electronic Privacy Information Centre appealed, the agency quickly found the protocol, but redacted most of it.

US District Court for the District of Columbia told Homeland Security that it couldn’t withhold Standard Operating Procedure 303 because it wasn’t a method for law enforcement investigations or prosecutions. According to the court, interpreting a safety exemption in order to “encompass possible harm to someone in the US within the blast radius of a hypothetical unexploded bomb” should also fly in the face of repeated Supreme Court directions.

The experts believe that Homeland Security will appeal the decision; otherwise it will have only one month to release the protocols to EPIC.

CCC avatarThe government is going in the wrong direction. Now it wants to be able to disconnect peeps from communication or free speech. That is the kind of thing that starts a revolution.

PS. nice gun, hehe.

Ray186 avatarThe police also have the ability to disable the camera in your phone remotely. You really have to ask. Why do they need to be able to do this?

card13 avatarThis is nothing new, shutting off wifi and wireless security cams (2.4GHZ older ones are closer to GSM frequencies) is easy all you need is a signal jammer that covers the 2.4GHZ and 5GHZ spectrum, as for a true internet kill switch that's been in place since the US holds the only physical Root servers that control the entire internet, the other ones are all virtual. Also ICANN who also now operates Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) is in Los Angeles, California; all the US has to do is threaten ICANN and the internet goes down.

Mr_T_Cat avatarSometimes I really do wonder if you Yanks are one the same planet as the rest of us. We are talking here of turning off Wi-Fi networks in order to prevent the remote detonation of bombs, etc. And all you are worried over is if it will infringe your civil liberties. You always raise the same arguments over gun control and your constitution. Whilst allowing all and sundry whack jobs to walk around buying assault rifles and in some states even bloody rocket launchers. Then you wonder why you have instances like the tragic Sandy Hook massacre.

Brady1210 avatar#9 If you give them an inch they take a mile; I would rather die with my rights then worry about remote detonation. Yes we are a ass backwards country at times, but that's what makes America. I'm glad I live in a state that I can legally carry a concealed weapon without a license be unregistered with a large capacity magazines..... Oh ya and my medical marijuana GOD BLESS AMERICA

No avatarCat;
This is about the governments desire for complete control over all communications. The reasons they give are a lot of BS!
One of the first and most important steps in the overthrow of a government, or the squashing of a revolt is control of the news.
It used to be the News is easily controlled by the government, social media and the internet have changed that, so the government needs to control it as well.
Ask yourself What's so important about remote detonation? Don't bombs with fuses and timers kill just as well? The IRA had no problem blowing shit up long before there was an internet or cell phones. Sadly my America has become a country cowed by it's own irrational fears, gullibility and stupidity.

Q. How do you know a politician is lying?

A. Their lips move.

No avatarYes #9, and the showers are for delousing.

The threat of a whackjob bombing everyone is the same at all times. It's the same as it was since the day explosives/gunpowder/fireworks were discovered. If you are going to give up your god-given freedom for fear of being killed, it's because of only one of three reasons:

A)You don't realize that violating peoples rights makes NO ONE SAFER and jeopardizes your security.
B)You want to subvert our security as the traitors at the NSSA do, by levying war on the public, violating their rights and the law.
C)You are a coward.

Pick one because the truth is that no laws will keep someone from building a rocket launcher any other weapon if they really want. The Pentagon is proof of that. You cannot stop the Pentagon from developing drones designed to hunt people any more than you can stop a lone nut. Their job is not to disarm people so that a whack job has an easy target.

The fact is that they had enough data to bust the alleged 9/11 hijackers and a number of other alleged terrorists, and let them go. Rather than get better analysts, they get more data. Rather than closing the border, they fondle women at the airport. The truth of the matter is that none of this is about radical extremists. Politicians don't give a crap if you get blown up any more than they care about the kids they kill with drones.

Anybody that believes this is for your safety, probably also believes exterminating Jews was about racism; when it was really about world domination with the Jews being easy targets that could be rounded up and forced to build bombs.

Embolism avatarno one Goverment or even group of Governments should control the internet affecting the world since such control could topple commerce and influence the development of others internal stability just for starters and it was created by TimBL to allow unfettered communication and to expand mans ability to learn and develop. It was not created as a tool to use to spy on others or for any governments to censor with their own ideology with the ability to turn of parts or all of it at a whim as a tool to control the masses.@9 if you want to stop the detonation of a wifi or phone controlled device there are 5 channel jammers for such used in Iraq and other places the troops use a 10 metre range hand set and there is a 40 metre desktop version, such devices work on cellphones, wifi, bluetooth and radio devices, such devices are relatively cheap at only a couple of hundred dollars also good in meetings/church etc to stop mobile phone users having interrupting calls coming in or out. : D

Embolism avatarI recently looked in to the possibility of using one such 5 channel jammer to kill the new wifi lane master speed cameras, but given that they can mount these new speed cameras up poles and with the units 10 metre range limitation I decided against it,although on the M25 they use wifi gantry speed cameras which are generally within the working range of the jammer. : D

Embolism avatar@9 it must be noted that such jammers kill wifi and Phones the latter not former are the most readily available and most commonly used for IED (Improvised explosive devices)and so killing the internet will not necessarily affect them. But gagging orders and the ability to blackout areas of the internet or shutting down selected media servers allowing for no counterpoint to arguments against say invading another country as was made with Syria could lead to potential genocide, food for thought. : )

Paulysvision avatarIt's quite simple really, not sure how you guys cannot fathom their honest intent to keep you safe.
If bombs are remotely triggered then how do you stop one from being set off?
A plausable scenario would be:
- you don't know where the bombs location but you do know the possible 'area' it is in.
- you don't know what network or carrier the trigger signal will be delivered through.
- you don't know who has placed the bomb or for what reason
- you cannot evacuate so many people in such a short time and considering the above facts, it would also be a big inconvenience and mayhem would surely erupt.
- you don't know how much time you have to disarm the bomb or how many lives are at stake.

Wouldn't it be nice if you could shut down all lines of communication and possibly save thousands of lives by simply disabling their precious wireless signal for a short period of time?

According to you guys this is not ok and you'll take the risk due to an addiction to wireless communication that you can't live without no matter the cost.

Some systems they have in place are a joke and need questioning and protest, while others like this need applaud.

No avatar@ #9: Just wanted to point out that here in America, nobody is allowed to buy assault rifles (these are fully-automatic). Those require permits with higher-level signatures and a lot of money, because the ATF banned those in 1934. Assault weapons are an ambiguous "classification" coined by the liberal media to skew your perception of a gun. Unfortunately, the "assault weapon ban" of 1994, which didn't actually decrease crime, banned "scary-looking guns with military-style features." Assault weapon is, by defining the individual words, "any weapon used in an assault." This could be a rock, hammer, knife, baseball bat, tuna fish of sufficient size and weight, etc. Stab somebody 34 times with a knife and let them bleed out - that's more humane than one .45 to put down your target, right?
