According to the recent research, people are having less sex than they used to because of addiction to digital gadgets: down to just under 5 times a month for the 16-44 age group and 3 times a month for the overall adult population. These statistics represent a 20% decline since 2000.
The decline may have various reasons, including demographic changes. Today fewer people live together and there are more single-person households due to the recession. More unemployed people have reported low sexual function, which is connected with low self-esteem and depression. However, those in work are blurring the boundary between the office and home by taking their gadgets into the bedroom. As you can understand, if people check emails after midnight, that leaves little time to do anything else. Even if it is not work, they are just playing a game or checking Twitter, too busy to notice the breathing person next to them (if there is any).
This is not all. Thanks to the ready availability of online pornography, even very young people are now exposed to imagery they would once have had to work hard to find. An adult can understand that compared to the kind of hyper-sexuality demonstrated in porn, many may feel the real thing like a disappointment.
Finally, the intrusion of the smartphone into our lives works in other ways as well. For example, 10% of the Americans use their iPhones or BlackBerries during sex, and this figure doubles among the young. However, it is unclear what are devices are used for exactly.
Some argue that the relationship we have with our smartphones has become almost erotically intimate, because we really confide our innermost desires in the gadgets. There seems to be a new generation of human – a kind of cyborg: part flesh, part electronic device. Remember Japan with its striking decline in sexual activity while various gadgets enjoying a high degree of, ahem, penetration.
It seems that the Internet revolution is changing so much about people – not only work, memories, homes, but their sexuality as well.
When have you last left your smartphone in another room for a night? Are you ready to make this move to get closer to your partner?
